Plane Stuck Over The Interstate

Sat Sep 18, 2004 3:59 am

Someone sent me this picture in an e-mail today:

The text that went with it said:

NORFOLK Naval Air Station Virginia -- One of the military's largest transports got stuck at the end of a runway atop the I-564 overpass for more than 16 hours. It was unable to turn around at the West end of Chambers Field at the Norfolk Naval Station. The incident forced the closing of the field to all but helicopter traffic and made for a dramatic sight for hundreds of motorists passing beneath it during morning rush hour.

"That thing's like a big building sitting there.'' said motorists. The nose of the aircraft actually stuck out and OVER the Interstate!

The aircraft's nose was so far over the end of the ramp, the crew was unable to see the runway where it was supposed to turn around so the pilot simply had to leave it at the end of the runway. The Air Force C-5 Galaxy, largest airplane in the free world, is almost as long as a football field and as high as a six-story building.

Weighing 420 tons with a full load, it uses a system of 28 wheels to distribute its weight. The aircraft had to wait for a specially made tow bar trucked in from Dover, Del. When the tow bar arrived, it was used to hook the C-5 to a tractor that then turned the aircraft around. The plane was not damaged.

Does anyone know if this is real or a hoax?

Thanks

Safe to say the text is a hoax. Pix is real enough though

Completly a Hoax, look at how the road starts to slope down. As if it leads into a tunnel under a Taxiway or so. Anyone that lives in the area, can you confirm this?

Which part of the text is it a hoax? The part where it says "the crew was unable to see the runway", or "largest airplane in the free world"?  Smile

Yes the road leads into a tunnel, but the aircraft was still stuck over the road.

Nowhere in the text does it say the aircraft ran off the runway and was left hanging over the road. The crew obviously just missed the last turnoff, which is why a towbar was roaded in!

It is always fun to see people who think they are "aviation experts" come to a conclusion before they have any real facts or evidence...  Insane

This plane is not "hanging over the highway". If not a hoax then it's surely ill informed journalism.

the C-5 is not the largest anymore. the Antonov 225 has much more capacity and has been flying for a while. The AN-124 is similiar in size and the A380 will be diminsionally much larger.

As for the picture, it's not a hoax. I'd like to see any of you try to taxi that behemoth around without getting yourself in a tight spot!

Why does everything that looks different have to be a hoax?? This whole hoax thing is getting old y'all. I don't see anything there that would suggest such. Someone who doesn't know anything about aircraft may think so, but surly we have a little better knowledge that that right???????

It's already been demonstrated by the link that Jeremy posted (reply 5) and the link I posted (reply 6) that it's not a hoax, so why now are those now considered as ill-informed journalism?

What does it take to convince you? Sworn and notarized statements from the crew involved posted as .PDF files?  Insane

Nobody without a licence and experience could do that with the C5, not even you.

The picture is completely TRUE / REAL . I used to live in the Norfolk area where the picture was taken. The story is that the C-5 came in to land in the middle of the night at the Norfolk Naval Airstation. The Pilot stopped the plane on the 564 interstate underpass because he couldn't see the end of the runway and just stopped instead of being afraid of running in to the grass. It was there till the middle of the day till a towbar from Dover Airforce Base could be trucked in to tow it off the runway. The Bad part was that this happened on a weekday when the base was open to all personel and it created a massive traffic back-up from people rubber necking at the plane. The runway does run over the interstate and has been for years. Hope this clears up the REAL or HOAX rumor.

Just My 2 Cents

That would be a sight when you are driving down the road unawares. Would have been fun to see in real life!
