More MD-11s For RG; A4 Cancels Orders.

Sat Sep 18, 2004 5:06 am

More movement in the world's MD-11 fleet:

VARIG continues to shuffle their MD-11 fleet. PP-VQL has been returned to Boeing while PP-VTG, a relatively new addition, has found a new life with FedEx. Lufthansa Cargo has acquired PP-VQM and PP-VTF will also undergo a freighter conversion. Strange how two of the latest MD-11s to join have already left the fleet in a matter of months...
Meanwhile, HB-IWA and HB-IWQ, both of which formed part of an order recently cancelled by Southern Winds of Argentina, are set to join VARIG within the next month. The troubled Argentine carrier is thus left with a single MD-11 on order (HB-IWI) as it struggles to reinforce international fleet, currently reduced to a single 767.
VARIG's new MD-11s join another recent addition, PP-VTU, to bring the Brazilian flag carrier's trijet fleet to 19...for now!

All parked at Goodyear, I believe. Small chance one or two of them will join Santa Barbara of Venezuela which has just announced plans to lease the type.

Is Varig shuffling its MD11 fleet due to differences in leasing costs, meaning disposing of aircraft with expensive leases and keeping the aircraft with price-friendly leases? Just an idea, but it is odd that two recently acquired aircraft have already left the fleet and now more MD11s may be added. Also, I did not realize that Varig now operated 19 MD11s, wouldn't that make them one of the largest operators of the MD11 (pax) in the world?

But, back to the topic, Varig's activity with the MD11s is very strange indeed....as Varig is not in the greatest of financial conditions, something is up.

There are very, but very strong rumors in the market, saying that they will cease their operation in 15OCT. Same thing to VASP.
I particulary doubt, as this was suposed to happen some months ago due to their poor finatioal situation...anyway...let´s wait and see.

Gossiping are saying that VASP routes go to GOL and VARIG routes go to TAM.

Dutchjet:

15% (30) of the world's MD-11 have at some stage flown for Varig, and at present, no (pax) airline in the world comes close to rivalling Varig's MD-11 fleet. But if the airline's precarious situation continues, I'd say more will be leased back and, sadly, converted to freighters, as 10 former-Varig MD-11s already have since 2000.

I haven't a clue why some of the youngest have already left the fleet. All I know is that Varig is dealing with several leasing companies with its MD-11s and the fleet comprises a mix of PW and GE variants, as well as -ERs and non-ERs. But if it's the former Swiss examples that both coming and going, then I see no pattern of type/lessor standardisation. Maybe someone from Brazil would know...
