Germanwings To Operate Aebal 717s?

Sat Sep 18, 2004 8:03 pm

According to the magazine Aviation Letter, Germanwings is to lease some of Aebal's 717 for the upcoming winter season. Don't know in which colors they will fly.

@Jorge: the rumour I heard is that all Airbus aircraft of Germanwings on lease from LH will be returned to LH, and that several or all A320's of Condor Berlin will go to 4U.

That's interesting. There have been rumours about Germanwings going for the 717 as a replacement for the Airbuses, and even about LH Mainline getting them to replace their 735s. Maybe the lease is a good opportunity for LH to see how well the 717s perform. Would be great to see some flying around in Germany!  Smile

How many 717s does Aebal have and can they actually spare any?

They operate just 4.

Hmmm....2 for Aebal and 2 for Germanwings? I wonder what sort of aircraft Aebal would use to substitute for any of the 717s they lend.

As an aside, I've never been on a 717 before, but am curious to. I can't see any airline in Canada adding that aircraft to their fleet.

AeBal probably has a seasonal downturn anyway in the winter, so likely no replacement aircraft are needed.

One of Spanair´s daily MAD-OVD-MAD flight is operated by an AeBal´s 717, even though both MAD and OVD are nowhere near the Balearic Islands. Maybe this would be one of the 717 flights to go?

Just flew it a couple of days ago, BTW. Very nice aircraft, I must say.

I don´t know how many people are aware that AeBal is controlled by Grupo Marsans, SAS Group and Spanair... and in turn, Spanair is controlled mainly by SAS Group.

I couldn't find a presss release with further information.

Also, the major aviation press with daily reports hasn´t carried any news.

As YYZ717 said, they operate 4 -- 3 owned and 1 leased (Pembroke.)

Spanair have been acquiring further MD-82 aircraft from SAS (SE-DIK;SE-DIN). This combined with airbus deliveries will leave the AeBal aircraft operating on routes such as MAD-AGP and AGP-BIO for spanair free to lease. My guess is Spanair are making money by leasing in 82's at a lower price than they are charging for leasing out the 717s...

Spanair are probably trying to simplify their fleet by standardizing on the MD'82's and the A32X's. The 717 simply doesnt fit into their operation.

Scandinanvian, who owns Spanair probably need a home for some of their MD82's.

Looks like 50% of europes 717's are heading back to Air Tran....

Have OA parked their 717's also?

Sorry, I have heard so many rumors about "magical" new 717 operators and orders on this website and from certain members, I will only believe this when I read something official.

There have been rumors posted about 717 for SNBA, Cebu Pacific, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Air Canada, Jetsgo, Finnair...

And how many of these have come into real life (yet)?  Insane

Anyway, always nice to read another rumor - at least it allows you to dream about a magical world, where the 717 ia actually a sought-after plane...  Smile

BTW - I like the 717 very much, but see its future prospects with a healthy dose of scepticism by now.

Cebu Pacific decided to operate an all Airbus fleet in the future, click here for the press release.

It would be nice to see a GermanWings 717, it would be even nicer to see one here in Long Beach.

Pembroke Leasing still has options on the books, but won't have them built until they actually have a customer for them.

AeBal could possibly lease a number of new aircraft from Pembroke, then turnaround and sub-lease them to Germanwings...just a thought!

I won't hold my breath on any new operators, but a 717 in the GermanWings livery would be lovely.

"AeBal could possibly lease a number of new aircraft from Pembroke, then turnaround and sub-lease them to Germanwings...just a thought!"

Why would anyone do that???

With the depressed rates for aircraft leases today, I already assume that Spanair are getting less from German wings than they are paying for their 717's.

The future Germanwings fleet could be easlily made up of all ex LH733's when they are retired from Germanwings' real parent.

Here´s a link to german magazine "AeroInternational" which reports about the 717 for Eurowings/germanwings (sorry only in German)
http://www.aerointernational.de/index.php?http://cm.jahr-tsv.de/aero-intern/internet/news/News_240904_13-1.php

It says: Eurowings group will operate two 717 from Aerolineas Baleares (AeBal) which are operated in wetlease. The two a/c will expand capacities on the one hand, on the other they are for testing the a/c for a permanent use for eurowings or germanwings. It´s also said, that eurowings has to replace their Bae 146 and germanwings is searching for smaller equipment. Cause of the weight of the 328 the 717 should be a good alternative in their eyes.

Greetings

Its still not clear if they will receive Germanwings colors. I believe that the 717 would look great in those colors....

For ZRH spotters, it doesn't really matter as the aircraft is (so far) planned to be here Thursdays and Fridays from 7.40pm till 8.10pm, starting 4th November. At this time, it's pitch black outside...

Let's hope it will come on the morning flights, too!
