UALs 747s To Europe

Thu Mar 02, 2000 5:39 am

Hello. I was wondering if anyone thinks or knows for a fact if United Airlines operates their 747s to Europe from the east coast? I dont think out of JFK but what about IAD?? If so, where will they be flying to?

Thanks.

They fly them to FRA & LHR from IAD, I believe. I KNOW they fly them out of IAD to Europe, though, and I know they DID fly them to FRA & LHR, I think they still do.

United used to fly their -100's and -200's into LHR, but stopped when they got their 777's. The only United traffic into LHR now is in the form of 767's or 777's from all US destinations, although I hear that they are going to intoduce a -400 service from somewhere on the west coast in April which will replace a 777 I think. Does anyone know if United have ever flown a -400 into England because I have never seen one over here but would love to, thx, Mark.

I fly out of Dulles (IAD) weekly and the only United 747 I've seen there recently goes to Los Angeles. Its Atlantic routes are flown with 777s and 767s. United uses its 747s on routes to Asia, Australia, New Zealand.

I know that UA has flown 747-400s into LHR, I have seen them my self while at the airport. I am not sure if they still do, read that they were stopping 744 flights to LHR. Not sure about the rest of europe

IAD-LHR service on the 744 has been discontinued.
Starting this summer, IAD-LHR will be operated 3 times daily on 772's.
LHR-IAD will be operated by one 763 and two 772.

United Airlines doesn't currently fly 744s to Europe, but will fly one from SFO-LHR and one from ORD-FRA starting 2 Apr00 or 8Jun00. This will be until end of Oct00. The777Man

KLM 777 and The777Man are correct. United usually only flies the 747-400 to Europe seasonally, in the summer when transatlantic travel from NA-Europe is at its peak. Last summer United flew the 747-400 from IAD-LHR and IAD-FRA. Again, only for the summer. Now they are flown mostly by 777-200s. In the upcoming summer SFO-LHR will use the 744, as well as ORD-FRA. No IAD-Europe flights will switch to the 747-400, oddly enough. They use to fill all the 744s out of IAD last summer, to Europe.

It really was pretty smart of UA to switch the LHR 747-400 from IAD to SFO this year.

SFO-LHR is UA's most lucrative route in the entire system, and has been, even before the Asian Crisis hit. While the 777's on the route do help with effeciency, the ticket prices are EXTREMELY high (highest in the system), and both SFO-LHR flights are filled to capacity every day. The 747-400's additional revenue (55 in Economy, 35 in Business, and 2-6 in First) will allow for $340,000 additional dollars/day on one of the SFO-LHR flights. That will be a great cushion of cash for when the fare-slashing starts in October!

Why Not SFO And Iad?

Thu Mar 02, 2000 11:49 am

Why not operate 747-400s from SFO and IAD during the summer? Is the 747-400 fleet just needed too much on the packed like sardine routes to Asia and Australia?
