L1011NG

Thu Mar 02, 2000 6:01 am

Does anyone think this could be an idea? What do people think a developed L1011 would need. Based on the L1011-lovers in this forum, presumably some people would like to see the L1011NG.

It would have to have an updated avionics suite (with FBW? and glass cockpit), a new interior and probably new engines - it would look quite cool with Trent 500s!

What do you think?

I honestly don't think it would be very cost efficient for Lockheed to get back into commercial aircraft production. Besides the fact, they'd only be relying on one airframe. McDonnell Douglas tried to improve on the DC10 airframe with the MD-11. Nice airplane, but it didn't exactly live up to it's expectations, performance and range wise. Unfortunately, it's sales didn't meet expectations, either, as Boeing is discontinuing this production line. The name of the game today is ASM's and fuel efficiency, the bottom line. An aircraft with 3 engines just isn't practical, when a similiar aircraft such as the 767-400ER, 777ER, A330-200, can perform the same functions, more economically with 2 engines. The ever growing trend has always leaned towards ETOPS. With the exception, of course, ultra long haul, which is where the 747-400, A340-300/500/600, come into play. Just my thoughts on the subject. Thanks for reading.

I've Designed It

Actually, I agree with John. For that reason, when I designed the L-1011-600 and -650 I gave them a massive increase in size, a totally new airliner which carries as many people as a 747 in far more luxury with only 3 engines. It flies farther, faster, is quieter, and is more fuel efficient.

I am going to have to agree with john. Don't count on Lockheed making a new L1011.

Im not really serious considering them reentering the civil aviation market, but I was wondering what a new 3 engine airliner would need to be able to compete in the current marketplace.

Lockheed tried a glass cockpit on the co-pilots' side of the prototype airplane. Sure, I would like to see an L1011NG, but I don't think that will happen. L1011s' seem to be worth more as parts these days.

All of Delta's L-1011s have been purchased by an unknown and new cargo/charter airline. This is a rumor at this point, but 13 are at the Lockheed Modifications Center being completely redone. A new digital cockpit, upgraded engines, and a few other things.

By the way, 747-600X, please send me the schematics.

How many L1011s are still in Delta's fleet and when are they going out?

The flying fleet stands at around 26 (probably less). A few are in Mojave, but most are in Victorville, Ca. A few of the desert a/c have had their gear removed and are sitting on railroad ties. A few of the scrapped planes were up against their design cycle limit and Lockheed refused to extend this limit without research and a huge financial commitment.

God I would love to see a new L1011 or have the old one stay around longer. But that wont happen. I was on one on Saturday and I just love that plane. Too bad in just a few years we wont see the L1011, at least the Delta ones...

I have been hearing that Delta Airlines is going to take 10 of there L-1011's and turn them into Freighters. I hope this is true. and who knows, maybe the makers of the L-1011 will see this as a opening door to get back into the freighter market..
