World Airways: Germany To China

Tue Sep 21, 2004 3:01 am

World Airways has announced that they will be flying cargo for Lufthansa between Nuremberg, Germany and Xi'an, China. With a full payload there will probably have to be a fuel stop somewhere, maybe Russia. Sounds like real interesting flying. It will start with a DC-10 and switch to an MD-11 next year. Would love to do a jumpseat on that!

Appears that this flight is a dedicated flight operating for a forwarder who is offering free capacity to other companies. Starting October 16th, initially with 1/7, going up to 3/7 in 2005. Contract is initially running till December 2005. Should be interesting to see how this service develops.

Thanks for the additional info, everyone. According to my research, BAK is Baku in Azerbaijan and ALA is Alma Ata in Kazakhstan. So cool!

That would be a nice trip on the jumpseat...think I`ll try to get one...

This fits into the strategy of LHC, Cargo Jumbos coming to Frankfurt are more and more wet leases as they are going to sell their Jumbos. LHC wants to increase capacity but they don`t have an adequate aircraft that fits into their strategy. LHC would like to purchase B777-cargos, but Boeing doesn`t offer it...Boeing doesn`t produce the MD11-C anymore...the B744-C seems to be too large and expensive. So the corporation with World seems to be a good deal. World is familiar with Germany because of their flights via Frankfurt for the US Forces.

World also has had an office in Kelsterbach, just outside the FRA airport, for many years. Their presence in Germany is well established but I think their activities have been mainly limited to military transportation, so the expansion into civilian cargo in that area is new business for them, from what I know.
