That's just great.  Insane DTW gets 2 flights with a 737-200 that they are just about ready to retire. Didn't anyone tell Grinchstein that DTW already has its share of vintage antique aircraft over at NW?

Hmm...they didn't mention anything about the new service to Beaumont, Texas, which starts 01Feb05, with three daily CRJs. It is already in reservation systems.

It's great and all that DL's adding these flights, but I think that they are putting too many of their eggs in one basket, so to speak. What if ATL has bad weather conditions? What if there are any IROPS at ATL? It could really have a negative effect on the whole system. I think DL is concentrating too much of their service out of ATL and needs to spread things out a little more.

When is this all supposed to take place? I have heard no actual dates associated with this all taking shape. Any info? Also, what does it mean that the flights in "()" "may" be operated by DL Connex? Thanks in advance.

XJRamper,

It doesn't give exact dates, It only says in the press release what the new scheldue will look like after Jan. 31st 2005, so I assume they will be started Jan. 31st or before.

It's too bad CID doesnt get ASA or Comair from ATL!!!

What about expansion south of the border from ATL? Do you know if frequencies or destinations to Mexico and the rest of Latin America (other than the announced GIG) will be added too?
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

I don't know but I bet someone else can answer. There seems to be some people that have some insider info on DL.

It's impressive how many flights DL will have at ATL after this expansion. 690+ mainline?!? That's incredible! Made even more incredible by the fact that over 150 of those flights will be on widebody aircraft. DL will now have hourly service to the following cities:

BOS, LGA, EWR, PHL, DCA, BWI, IAD, and almost hourly to MCO, TPA, and FLL.

What's also incredible is the capacity on ATL-MCO - 15 flights a day, of which 13 are wide-bodies (762, 763, 764, and 2 772s daily). The other two are 1 757 and 1 MD88.

Way too much overkill. Hourly service to all of those cities is not warranted. And for anyone whose been around the ATL operation just wait until the ceiling drops below 5,000 ft and spacing between arrivals doubles, not to mention what happens when the weather really drops. The other part of the problem is what happens to all of the other carriers using ATL when this increased flow control goes into effect. You watch AirTran's on-time percentage take a big hit too as well as the increased misconex. I don't see how this will all work out until after the 5th runway is completed. It's going to be a mess.

Just my 2 cents.

If DL thinks they can fit all of these flights into ATL than I say go for it. Their financial situation right now, well........ could be better, as we all know, so saving a few bucks by moving their DFW flights to ATL and CVG is a fine idea. By the way, what airlines will be filling in the empty gates that DL used after they are gone?

How come Delta does not operate more flights out of LAX? They seem to have a finaminal capacity, or ad least when ever I am on Delta out of LAX they seem to have great capacity. So why didn't they ad flights to LAX?

OK, I really don't get it. I thought one of the major problems with the industry is too many seats chasing too few passengers means no pricing power. How does moving seats from DFW to the other hubs help one bit. Yeah the costs from DFW disappear, but the bigger problem is one of capacity. There will be lots of empty seats out of Atlanta, I can only imagine, or lots of very cheap airfares.

Im glad for these cities, though im surprised CRW isnt getting an extra flight. They were even talking about bringing the CRJ-700 here in place of some CRJ's, (i think the noon and 5:30, or something close like that departure.)

Think of ATL and Florida of a large scale version of DFW where AA pushed DL out via superior firepower. It's a defensive move, retreat to your natural base and push out the competition. This is the thinking behind Delta's moves. Airtran and USAir and Indy are in for a rough go.

It may seem that AA pushed DL out of DFW with superior quality, but the fact is DL wasn't making any money at all at DFW, not during Grinstein, nor under Mullin's, Allen's, and Harris' tenure as CEO. They had a choice: Give up SLC and build up DFW and CVG, or vice versa. If they had given up SLC, that might as well put the nail in the coffin for DL.

MCO is back to 2 772s again?

I remember when there were 3-4 a day to MCO when I first moved there.

Where are they going to park all these planes? Gate space seems to be cramped as is -- seems like there's rarely a free gate here. Not that I mind...I love KATL. But still.

" DTW gets 2 flights with a 737-200 that they are just about ready to retire "

Well, im very excited about the 737-200's coming in, they'll be the only 737-200's at DTW, as there are currently none right now. Plus, i've never seen a 737-200 before ( in person ), so when i go spotting at DTW sometime in February/March/April whenever, i look forward to seeing them  Big grin

I'm surprised that there is no increase in service on ATL-ORD. DL was running hourly service prior to September 11th, then cut it down to 10 round trips, pulling the 767s and 757s. Considering that AA is now running RJs on the route, one would see this route as a natural for additional flights.

I think all airlines had to agree to reduce frequencies somewhat to ORD. The FAA said it was too congested.

This is stunning...I thought DL intended to cut back in ATL slightly...isn't congestion going to become a problem for DL at some point....well, in any case, more flights are definitely something DL needs...out of ATL I expect DL will bring in profit, as ATL is a big enough city to support all of DL's routes.

The new rolling hub will help with the gate space. This will put a lot of pressure on AirTran. Business travelers want connection choices. More frex, more connections. ASA was told that the ramp could hold 500 frex on thier ramp with the rolling hub. By the way, how is DAL going to be written off so fast when they still have yet to file?

Let's not forget a new runway and new control tower at ATL aren't too far away. Sometime in 2006. So, 2005 might be a bit rough in terms of delays, but things should smooth out quite a bit beyond that.

There are currently 11 flights from ATL-ORD, with one 757 (at 5:14p) and one 767 (at 9:49p).

All those planes coming out of the DFW shut down obviously have to go somewhere. I hope they can still fill them out of ATL. Why not just make another lowfare shuttle system out of Atlanta? Somehow I don't think its going to work too well - I guess we will have to wait and see. It looks like Delta's system is heading for an imbalance of sorts, with one unwieldy hub, and a bunch of other insignificant ones. Hope they don't end up turning into another USAir in who's case it was too much East coast, and too little of anything else.

And I don't think AA pushed DL out of DFW, DL did it to themself if you ask me. For the amount of competition that existed, or the lack therof, DL should have been just ok if they had really tried, or knew how to. RJ's and trying to keep business in AA's backyard... I think not!

For some reason I think chapter 11 is approaching at a very fast rate if US does not fold quick... Good luck Delta, I hope things work out for all in the game!

I'm not a DL "hater" so-to-speak just because I work for AirTran, but DL is exhibiting all the signs of a carrier about to enter bankruptcy. They are spending money like there's no tommorrow and still loosing billions. They're putting all leather seats in all aircraft, opening these new cities/routes and selling rock-bottom fares. It doesn't make sense. The whole catering issue is indicative of pre-bankruptcy behavior: A vendor demands payment up front BEFORE services are rendered. Grinstein himself has told anylists that DL must cut costs by 2.7 billion dollars annually or it will be forced into bankruptcy court. I love Delta. I fly them often out of TPA and ATL. To see DL file chapter 11 would be a very bad thing for many people. They have a loyal workforce and good people working there that deserve to keep thier job. If DL continues this (in my opinion) reckless financial behavior, I fear they may have no other options.

P.S. AirTran is not threatened by DL expansion in ATL. FL also has a very loyal customer base. Also, FL is continuing to "connect the dots" in the route system to offer more point-to-point service without a connection in ATL. Yes FL may struggle through a few fiscal quarters, but I believe they have the momentum and stability to come out unscathed.

Thanks for reading.
