A380 First Flight

Thu Sep 23, 2004 11:07 am

Does anyone know when the A380 is scheduled or expected to go on its first test flight?

Someone at some point on this forum said January 5th. Don't know where that came from... Seems unlikely that they could decide a date that far ahead. Maybe it's a goal.

According to most people of the A.net crowd the A380 is a total flop so maybe it will never fly....

NOW, back to the real world I also heard Jan 05'. Can't wait to see it as I know it will be on almost every TV station on the planet  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

First flight is rumored to be Jan/Feb '05. Why do we keep going in circles about this over and over again??

Because it is an extraordinary aircraft and people want to know about it. It is also easier and quicker to ask than to search. If we don't ask again and again then we will soon run out of topics!! Big grin

My bet is on LHR since LAX won't be able to handle the giant.

But seriously, it's a long time until entry into service. What's with not being able to handle it? They have plenty of time if they really need to get ready.

Maybe I have missed something but didn't Virgin defer their A380:s because of the terminal at LAX not being ready for the A380? And hey, it's only about 1½ year until SQ are getting their first, not that long time after all.

I still put my money on LHR  Wink/being sarcastic

nahhh it will be to SYD.. although according to one of my teachers SYD and MEL are fighting over who will be able to accept it. I would have thought both would be up grading to handle it.

Also she thinks its being built by Boeing........ and the entry into service is 2008 and BA, CX and a whole list of other airlines who haven't ordered it have apparently ordered three each... I gave up on correcting her..

SQ's first A380 will neither be to LHR nor to SYD. They will test the plane and train the crews for 1 to 3 months on shorter Asian routes before they will bring it to its designated route. So HKG, BKK, KUL and CGK have a good change to see the first A380 flying; and SIN for sure.

BTW they did the same with their first A345.

I emailed Airbus customer services regarding the first flight and dates last Sunday and had a response - a standard response. Basically we have to keep checking the Airbus website for updates.

I was really cheeky and asked if there was any chance of participating in their flight trials (where they operate passenger trials) but no response - which I was expecting as I think this is only for Airbus staff. Worth asking I thought.

I too want to visit Airbus when this aircraft flies. Everybody has their opinions and we're all talking about the A380. It's going to be another chapter in aviation history!

Guess we'll have to wait and see!

Ok latest news on the Airbus intranet, as my fellow colleague Jonathan-l said, is going to be a roll-out on 18th January 2005. Actually, he might know more than me, but so far it is called a "public reveal".

18th January will be for the general public (airlines executives???) and 19th January will be for us employees out of a draw.

Concerning flight testing, what is usually done is that they invite the family of the employees to try out the on-board accommodations.

Usually after that, some of the employees are invited to do the first round-the-world trips, prior to first deliveries.

Officially, they do not want to give a "first flight" date yet as it is very difficult to have an accurate idea whereas the preliminary testing are not yet finished...

The goal is January, 2005. That got written as January 05. Then it was misinterpreted to mean the 5th day of January. It could be any time in January or February if everything progresses normally.

I think everyone agrees that before they install a passenger interior, it should at least be able to get off the ground.  Smile

One simple question and please take it easy. Will the inaugural flight take place from Tollouse to Tollouse? I do not know how long these maiden flights last as I have never been on one myself. May be they can fly to another Airbus's site as Broughton or Filton in UK or Getafe in Spain.

There were some rumours yesterday about Farnborough being changed for a new location next year.
As taken from yesterday's Financial Times

"The Farnborough air show, one of the world's premier showcases for the aerospace industry, could be under threat as its future is reviewed by the Society of British Aerospace Companies.

The society, which organises the biennial show, said yesterday that it was committed to the present format, including the daily flying display, for 2006."

However the Society of British Aerospace Companies is committed to bringing the show to a new venue if decides pulling out Farnborough

It's amazing that since it's still in our heads as a "model" that we see in magazines, it's hard to imagine that the first flight will be in 5 months! WOW!!!

BTW, when that day comes, what TV shows would show the A380's first flight?

Just curious what everyone thinks... if all the worlds media are covering the take off and something goes wrong (kind of like that airbus fly by wire demonstration) what do you think the result would be?

Not sure what the rest of the world's new's agencies are like for aviation, but I'm pretty sure here in the USA, the news will report it and show a lame clip from the 90's of a NW DC-9 taking off  Smile

I hope Airbus fix their exploding hydraulic lines on the A380 before it flies.

This is a rumor that I heard from one of the staff of a big A380 customer. Due to the higher hydraulic pressure on A380 (5000 psi vs 3000 psi for present day aircrafts), even though it looked viable on the computer models, hydraulic lines has been exploding when they were powered upto 5000 psi on actual aircraft.

Complete BS, it worked as planned and behaved as required also. I did not witness, but since I am working quite close the Final Assembly Line, I would have heard.

They checked if there was any leaks or pressure dropping, but that did not happen.

Just curious what everyone thinks... if all the worlds media are covering the take off and something goes wrong (kind of like that airbus fly by wire demonstration) what do you think the result would be?

That wasn't a fly-by-wire demonstration, that was a very unprepared crew that went down for a very unprepared small airshow while performing a revenue flight.

Just to add to that, no Airbus has ever been involved in a fatal accident due to malfunctioning FBW systems. That crash was totally due to bad procedures at AF and pilot errors.

It is highly doubtful that the 380 will have an accident, especially during the first flight. It's safe to say they will not be pushing the envelope.

As there seem to be some Airbus employee's here... Any updates on the weight issues? Particularly OEW?

Last info I saw still showed OEW projected to be down to 282,500kg. Any progress?

Just a few additions to the above comment:

First revenue flights are to NRT, when the second aircraft arrives A380 services will be directed to LHR (Flights SQ321/SQ322) followed in a matter of days to SYD (Flights SQ221/SQ222). This straight from the Asia Pacific Region Marketing and approved by their Board. When I asked about services to USA when and to which cities, these would occur sometime in 2007, cities were yet to be announced.

I hope that helps.

When I asked the same for QF I could not be given a definitive answer.

Aussie747,

Given the fact that the SQ 001/002 route (SIN to SFO via HKG) is one of Singapore Airlines' most lucrative routes, I think SQ may try to start flying the A380-800 on this route as soon as they get enough planes--probably by the Summer 2006.
