Explain ER, LR, IGW.....

Thu Sep 23, 2004 10:12 pm

Can anyone explain the differences between Extended Range (ER), Longer Range (LR), Increase Gross Weight (IGW) etc...? I know they all have something to do with the increase range of an aircraft.

If this has been discussed before then please point me in the right direction.

ER = Extended range = Fuel capacity and/or MTOW have been increased to improve range.

LR = Longer range = same as ER just to a more significant degree.

IGW = Increased Gross Weight = The maximum gross weight of the plane has been increased, usually giving a higher MTOW and improved range.

Thanks Rj111

pardon my ignorance but why increasing MTOW will increase the range, is it because you can hold more fuel?

The IGW explanation was misleading, when i say it often increases range thats usually in combination with a tank increase. But yeh the higher MTOW means it can carry more fuel thus go further. IIRC Some planes cant fill the tanks to the brim and carry a realistic payload similtaneously so occasionally a MTOW alone can boost the range slightly at certain payloads, but its usually a combination of the two.

Experts, Feel free to bash me if anything is wrong.

Thanks again Rj111

I only raised this issue because you get various different terms like 772LR, 773ER and A346IGW but yet they are all very similar with just increased range to the original.
