Coming Soon: Delta PHX-SLC...14 Daily Nonstops!

Fri Sep 24, 2004 11:21 am

Due curiousity about Delta's DFW pullout, I was randomly pulling up Delta's schedule on February 1, 2005 from Phoenix to Salt Lake City. I found 14 daily nonstops, one of which was a mainline 738, the remaining 13 were a mixture of CRJs and CR7s. In most cases, the flights run hourly. Is that a realistic expectation for Delta to expect that much O&D traffic between the two cities? Let's not forget HP and WN have a significant share of the market too.

I was actually noticing this myself. That seems like a lot more seats than necessary. Sounds like Delta would rather have frequency than anything else. On top of Delta's 13 CRJ's and one 737, Southwest has 7 737's daily, and HP has 1 A320, 3 A319's, and 4 CRJ's.

That's a lof of traffic each way. Great for the consumer though  Big grin

Interesting, almost a shuttle like service like what DL/US ops at DCA/LGA/BOS. Maybe they have a lot of connecting services in either city, maybe a lot of Mormans going to SLC, lots of skiers?

In terms of capacity, that will put PHX-SLC with 840 daily seats. I don't think there will be any problem selling that amount of seats. As it is right now, the RJ flights between PHX-SLC are always oversold.

Then hasn't HP or WN jumped on this?

I don't think this is too much.. It wasn't many years ago that DL was flying 762s and 757s to PHX from SLC. I'd rather they go back to mainline instead of a dozen CRJs.

Isnt there a huge mormon population in PHX and AZ? Would that have something to do with it?

Yes, there is, in Mesa in particular. And lots of family ties to Utah, and missionaries, students going to BYU, and business links, and people hitting the slopes when the snowflakes fall.
