What Happened To The Beach At SXM?

Sun Sep 26, 2004 1:33 am

Sorry I don't know how to post the hyper links! -These two pics are a month apart and were taken at almost the same angle, It appears that the beach at the approach end of the runway is no longer there? However the new beach line looks man made, if so why, or could it be due to all storms down in that Atlantic and GOM?

This seem to be a bit typical for the whole island. Beaches disappear and come back. I remember another beach "Baie Longue"-Long Bay. It was "away" quite a long time after - maybe after another storm - sand was back and the beach was beautiful again. So maybe this is the same that sometimes happens to Maho.

Popularity apparently also has its disadvantages. Sad
Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!

Hey

as mentchioed the beach comes and goes. The most cause of destructions of the beach are storms, this recent photo probaly was from one of the many hurricanes.

My friend was there about two years ago I believe during a hurricane and said that the beach had disappeared and two days later it was back, he also said the AN-124 came into SXM for supplies on the island. Does anyone have any info of a AN-124 in SXM?? Thanks

I was at SXM on the Sept 25th and the beach is relatively back to what its supposed to be. However, its noticably a bit smaller.

It's a combination of sand erosion and tide. Even with the issue of sand notwithstanding, you can see that the tide is far back in this photo (about 40 yards from the fence)

and very advanced in this photo.
