NW's Old Seoul Kimpo (Gimpo) Hub

Tue Sep 28, 2004 7:47 am

Is there anyone who has some info about Northwest's old hub at Seoul Kimpo (Gimpo) airport from back in the 80s and early 90s? I was just thinking about when I transferred there back in 1989, and I was curious about how many flights they operated, to what cities, and what type of planes they used. The only flights that I am aware of during some point in the 80s and 90s were:

DTW-SEL - Daily 744
LAX-SEL - Daily 747 I was on this one
SEA-SEL - Daily 747
SEL-HKG - Daily 747 I was on this one too.
NRT-SEL - Daily 332 - current route via ICN.

Did they ever operate nonstops from Seoul to MSP, JFK, HNL, or anywhere else in the US? Did they ever have many intra-Asian routes (KIX-SEL, SEL-MNL?)? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks. Sorry, I guess that it would now be Inchon and the last flight would be Incheon.

According to the NW timetables in my collection they did have more SEL flights until the early to mid 90s:

They also flew SEL-ORD in the 80s when they were Northwest Orient.

NW was not given 5th freedom rights from the Korean government. By that, I mean, NW was not permitted to fly O&D traffic to/from SEL. They could only connect through SEL.

At NRT, (Japan in general) however, NW has 5th freedom rights, meaning they can carry passengers originating in NRT as well as connecting from other points within Asia, through Japan, to other points.

NW's OSA/SYD route was cancelled because the Japanese and Australian governments required that NW carry at least 50% of the traffic as connecting to the US/Canada, etc., whereas most business was strictly between OSA and SYD (NW being the only carrier, Japanese or Australian, to fly that route).
