Possible CX Hub?

Wed Sep 29, 2004 4:05 am

CX is already using YVR as a hub. They have 838, 828, 888 and the cargo flight that stops here. Why does CX get to fly into YVR this much? I guess in the future, we might see more beautiful Cathay Pacific planes here. Does the company operate any Latin American flights right now? I would guess this is one of the good places to stop at.

I doubt it, particularly if/when AA begins ORD-HKG nonstop.

I know that Mexican carriers have fifth freedom rights from Canada under the Mexico-Canada bilateral but, would a Hong Kong airline (i.e. CX) be granted fifth freedom rights by the Mexican and Canadian governments to operate HKG-YVR-MEX? JL already does this from NRT so I guess it might be possible. Anyone can provide some info on this?

CX has zero hubs outside HKG. It's all enroute to somewhere else such as HKG-YVR-JFK. Not sure where cargo a/c goes.

YVR is not a hub for CX.
838 turns around back to HKG.
828 only stops @ YVR as a fuel stop.
888 continues onto JFK.
The cargo planes either terminate in YVR and turn around or are enroute to other North American cities or on its way back to HKG.

oh...CX has their own employees in the airport and building in SYD and YVR. They are ground agent, pilots, cabin crews, gate agent, chef and kitchenhands in the catering, mechanics and engineers.

in YVR the CLS catering is a joint venture with LH, not sure with the SYD one;
So far there are only YVR and LON base CX cabin crew, while the YVR base can operate one flight with the whole team, the LON base needs to mix with the HKG crew.

All CX flights originate in HKG and go via YVR, TPE, or BKK onto another destination. When one says hub, that would mean a TPE from say NRT/NGO would arrive together and the two planes continue onto HKG and say MNL, but that's not the case.
If one looks at CX's route structure, all routes basically go thru HKG.
CX just has a lot of 5th freedom routes particularly from TPE and some from BKK & SIN.
A mini-hub would be what NW and UA do in NRT because pax can truly connect by say SFO-SIN via NRT.

CX does have 5th freedoms at YVR, but one of their main reasons for using it is because of the idiotic elimination of TWOV in the US. They also sell YVR-JFK-YVR
