A320 Production Question

Why is it that all single-aisle aircraft apart from the A320 are built at Hamburg, but the A320 is built at Tolouse? Surely it would make sense for A320 production to shift to Hamburg with its other family members, and leave production at Tolouse for the A300, A330, A340 and A380.

Job sharing arrangement between the governments I guess.

I believe the A320 line was from the start in Toulouse, already with the A300/A310. So they must have asked for some share of the pie I guess...

Its just that it would probably be more cost effective to shift production to Germany, and make logistics easier

Probably you are right. But politics are politics. And this is probably just an intra-company issue, not even a governmental one.

This is what I heard.

After WW2, Germany had restrictions on its ability to manufacture or assemble aircraft. I believe these treaties are now disolved, however, this did not occur in time for the A320 line to be placed there. Eventually the single isle family will all come out of Hamburg, with the widebodies out of Tollouse.

RICARDOAB,

there are two main reasons:

Historic: during the 1980s when Airbus Industrie developed the A320 Toulouse (TLS) was the company's main plant where every plane (they only produced A300s and A310s then) was assembled. Therefore the A320 was asselmbled there, too.

Capacity: the plant at Hamburg-Finkenwerder (XFW) doesn't have the capacity to produce all the A320s beside the A319s, A318s and A321s, so until now no effort has been made to transfer the final assembly of the A320 to XFW.

And of course Airbus Industrie (with its headquarters in France) doesn't want to produce its most successful plane outside France ...
