UA Was Mainline In All 50 States

Wed Sep 29, 2004 9:34 am

Does anyone remember when UA was mainline in all 50 states? I used to have several timetables, but have since discarded a lot of those things. I never imagined there would be an A.NET or EBay where these things I treasured as a kid would actually come to be useful. In any event, I heard that UA is considering mainline back into LIT. Can anyone tell me specifically how many states UA currently operates to mainline - I am sure it is a far cry from the 1980s when their colorful birds graced airports in every state in our union.

Thanks - jetpixx

ERJ: There was a thread on this a week or two ago. View it here:

In 1984, UA became the first airline to serve all 50 states. I am assuming it is Wilmington - since I do not have the timetable - I cannot verify. I did a simple google search and see plenty of proof, although I am trying to find specific equipment types and the exact destination within DE. I am thinking 1984 is too early for UnitedExpress.

I don't think that UA or any of it's commuter airlines served WIL. As far as I can recall, the only airlines that served WIL was Altair, Ransome/Allegheny Commuter. WIL has never really had a base for commercial airline business. It's too close to PHL, and NE Philadelphia Airport was the real alternative for commuter airlines, but even those days are gone.

Wilmington is ILG.

UA (mainline) indeed served ILG. EA also served ILG.

Most recently, Shuttle America, when they were a standalone carrier, flew ILG-BDL/BUF/ORF, using Dash 8 aircraft.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

So which state is missing on their route map (mainline and express)?

I can only think of Mississippi and Delaware. And Arkansas till flights to Bentonville will begin.

Is there anothe rairline that serves all 50 states?

The state of Delaware has no scheduled passenger service from any carrier.

I have a UA system timetable from 1986 that shows two flights per day from ILG: one to BWI and one to RIC, both operated by 727s.

If you can get your hands on one of their older timetables, you'll find it interesting how many of these non-hub to non-hub flights there are. I guess it was a way of reaching smaller cities before the days of large regional jet/prop feeder operations.

UA did serve ILG (Wilmington, DE) in the 80s with 727 ORD-MDT-ILG routing.

In the 70s, EA flew daily DC930 from ATL to Newark that includes stop in ILG, PHL. It would have been nice to fly ILG - PHL such a short flight. The last passenger airline to serve DE was Shuttle America Dash 8 with routes to Trenton, Worcester, Buffalo, Norfolk. Currently, only cargo airlines serve ILG-----anybody knows what airline? aircraft? and routing? Thank you for the answers.

I remember that UA had a promotion where if you flew to all 50 states you won lifetime free travel.

It was like a 30-day time limit and you had to touch down on a UA flight in every state.

Some guy did it I think.

Mainline back to LIT? Hmm..I would think that they would start RJ service first but I am not complaining! It would have to wait till March though.

When Gate 1 gets finshed with construction American Eagle will move back to it and leave Gate 5 open for anybody wanting it. F9 will be operating out of the only other gate that was open to anyone.
