JAL Upgrades To YVR And Downgrades On HKG?

Wed Sep 29, 2004 4:11 pm

I have recently heard from many of my friends that the HKG route now sees many classic 747's fly in. And on the other hand, as of the day after tommorow, they are going to upgrade the NRT-YVR route to a 744 and of course continuing onto MEX. HKG should be a high density priority route for them. Why do they downgrade HKG or ICN? I mean I know that YVR is a longer flight of course, but leasing more 744 seems more like a good idea while getting rid of some of there classic 747's........

JAL's schedule to HKG hasn't changed a whole lot actually...except they have been putting more 777s on the route recently. But it's always a nice mixture, and on some days we get up to 4 747s (+ the 2 767 flights or sometimes even the DC-10). Other days it can look something like 2 777s + 2 747s + 2 767s. So it hasn't changed at all. The number of classics has actually gone down compared to previously (when they didn't have that many 777ERs), but they still come on an almost daily basis, and we always get at least 1 744 everyday.

HKG remains the 3rd most important market for the airline after Seoul & Shanghai.

Remember many of the 743s that flew transpac or to Europe are now mainly on Asian or beach runs. JL 731/732 on NRT-HKG has always been 744 in FCY, but the other two dailies JL 735/739/730/736 has been anything from 763 to 744.
KIX & FUK-HKG are now 763ER.

Japanese airlines aren't very big on leasing second-hand aircraft, so there's little chance of new pax 744 entering either carrier's fleet. Though JL will very soon get its first of two 74Fs on order.

Ktachiya,
Do you hang out at NRT or HND very much?

Thanx for the feedback. As for your question whether I reside at NRT or HND. I am sorry I don't. I currently study over here at Vancouver so I go spotting at YVR all the time whenever I have a day off or time available. Yet, I do fly in and out of Narita about four or six times per year and even more. When I permanently move back to Japan (I hope pretty soon) that is my intention although it might end up as KIX. Yeah, I think KIX will see an increase in classic jumbos. Pretty much the only route on a 744 is CDG, LHR, and LAX from there or is there more?

And I am not sure if it was you but there is a triangular flight out of KIX, NOT NRT to BNE. I have flown on that flight 8 times on a Resocha. JL 777/778 and it goes KIX-BNE-SYD-KIX. So on the way back from BNE, you have to go all the way to SYD to go back to Kansai which sorta doesn't make sense. Eitherway, thats all my info thanx for providing info and if there is something more I can answer, plz ask me anytime!!!!

Thanks

Ktachiya

JL should have put their B744 with the Magic IFE system on the YVR ages ago........it's been too long, their flights out of YVR are usually packed with people connecting thru NRT to SGN/TPE/HKG/MNL.....and need more choices for the IFE

Ktachiya,

JL has four 744 based at KIX to operate the flights to CDG, LHR & LAX. They will discontinue the CDG route, once new NGO is up running. KIX does see an odd 744 flight to ICN at times.

JL has only recently converted all its 744 to IFE standard. The newest cabin innovations always end up on the more lucrative routes to LHR, JFK or ORD.
The touristy routes get the shaft.

I have been on planes packed with IFE and never turn on the system except to the route map. Sometimes, I would much rather just sleep and read or work. The lack of IFE is never an excuse, at least for me.
