I'd get AOPA all over this one....How can the city tell someone they can't have an aircraft on their own property?

An aquaintance of mine is the pilot of a local news helicopter. He regularly 'commutes' and lands in his back yard. His biggest pet peeve is the question "Do you have a pad?"...YOU DONT NEED A PAD TO LAND! EVERYBODY THINKS YOU NEED A PAD!!. That was his answer to me when I asked him this question. Apparantly the law reads something like you can land anywhere it doesn't cause a hazard to persons or property or where it is not expressly prohibited to land. I am bracing myself for angry a.net clarifications to this.

I beleieve Connecticut State law prohibits any aircraft from landing anywhere but an airport except in an emergency. Many other states have similar laws.

There was no ticket involved...just a $10,000 prop...and, as I'm sure you are aware, the loss of my beloved nose wheel pant... Sad

Zoning would play a role here. You could pretty easily make the case that helicopter ops are far outside the scope in single-family residential zoning, assuming this area is sort of "standard" suburbia. If you were out in the middle of nowhere in Texas or Utah, like on a big ranch, wouldn't be an issue (but those areas probably don't have much zoning either.)
