AA To End JFK-LGB

Fri Oct 01, 2004 2:55 pm

No surprise here.

American Airlines will end double-daily New York City/JFK-Long Beach service on 01Nov04. The flights are no longer bookable on aa.com.

Any idea where American's Long Beach slots are going, be it jetBlue or somebody else?

I would guess either AA will add more DFW flights or give nonstop LGB-ORD a try again.
Either way both routes have no competition from LGB.

Yes, I was told this in a meeting at HDQ a few days ago, that AA is ending their LGB-JFK flights. It was mentioned that AA will increase the number of LAX-JFK flights to compensate, and that AA is going to concentrate their trans-con flights from LAX.

Once again JetBlue knocks American off another route out of JFK. At this point, American will havs as many flights out of JFK domestically as United, which United has 12, 6 to LAX and 6 to SFO, not including 7 Express flights to IAD. American just needs to stick with business trans-con and international services from JFK because every time they try to put up a good fight with JetBlue out of JFK, they always end up losing.

After all, it is JetBlue's hub, not American's. American's growth at JFK has been at the minus side the past couple of years because of you know who and it will continue to decline slowly but surely. I'm sure the PHX route will be gone soon as well. I'm surprised it's staying as long as it is now.

American just needs to stick with business trans-con and international services from JFK...

That's the way it has been for AA at JFK since I was hired 17+ years ago. Everytime AA has tried to expand its JFK offerings (many attempts in many markets) it ends up primarily drawing its own JFK traffic away from already established and successful JFK flights.

Really? How. American has 11 daily non-stops on JFK-LAX, five on JFK-SFO, and six each on JFK-MIA and JFK-SJU. That alone out numbers UA on domestic services. And let's not even get started on the other routes...RDU, STI, SDQ, PAP, BGI, SJC, SAN...

As far as the LGB slots go, they automatically revert to B6. As part of the agreement when AA (and then AS) whined about B6's deal at LGB, they agreed that B6 would take any slot that got dropped. This is not too much of a surprise given their new ad campaign that slams LGB as different from Los Angeles. I just wonder what flights B6 will launch with 2 more slots.

Unless they dont use them elsewhere, right? They could add more frequency to DFW and not let go of the slots they took from us if they wanted.

I think you missed my statement. I said domestically which rules out STI, SDQ, PAP, & BGI. This statement also includes sarcasm as to the fact that American would have as little service as United does into JFK. I know AA would never reach UA's levels unless the end is near. The point I'm making is that they are slashing service out of JFK at a high rate. SNA is already gone, with LGB & PHX next. The question is what city is next to go.

What's sort of funny about AA's JFK-LGB service is that it was both started and ended because of B6. Were it not for B6's service, AA would never have started the flights in the first place.

Very true PROSA...just another attempt to kill competetion. Fortunately for B6..AA doesn't have luxury of flying unprofitable routes anymore...everyone needs to be cost concious.

It would be great if B6 added LGB-PHX flights. I think they would do very well. PHX-LAX area is a HUGE market.

Acutally there are 3 slots at LGB not being used since we dropped our 224 JFK flight. AA will probably not do anything with those slots for a couple of months. They have 6 months to use them or they will loose them. We have not knocked AA off another JFK route, AA is just shifting attention towards DFW since DL is going down to 31 flights a day there by Jan 31.

As a side note, we will be having 71+ daily flights from NY to FL this winter.

My guesses would be another LGB-FLL and maybe adding LGB-TPA/MCO...maybe Phoenix.

WN and HP compete on the LAX-PHX route, UA also flies it with Express RJs (not nearly as profitably).

According the the B6 website, they don't fly LGB-PHX, and they probably wont. I bet they will increase frequencies to LAS, as that is the main thing they cut when they had their slots stolen

If they get those two additional slots, I doubt they'll go to PHX, LAS, or anything like that. Definitely more transcons...those slots are golden, and I'm sure they'd rather put them on additional frequencies instead of giving them to short-hop routes.

Their total slotage would be 24. During the summer, I would assume they'd offer:

4x IAD
9x JFK
3x BOS
5x OAK
2x LAS
1x SLC

Just a guess, which I think is realistic. We know that JetBlue concentrates on transcons, and their LGB ones are extremely profitable for them.

UA's domestic schedule out of JFK:
IAD 7x
LAX 6x
SFO 6x

AA's domestic schedule out of JFK:
BOS 5x
DCA 3x
DFW 3x
LAX 11x
MIA 6x
RDU 4x
SEA 1x
SFO 5x
SJC 1x
SJU 7x
STT 1x

Is there some reason why AA/AE offers N/S JFK-RDU and not to it's hubs at STL and ORD?

International connections. O'Hare doesn't need it, since they have the international flights non-stop or via Miami. St. Louis can connect through O'Hare and Miami.

For Raleigh, the easiest way to connect to Europe on oneWorld partners is via New York City.

I guess that part was missed. Sarcasm would also be like me saying Delta would only has 5 mainline flights a day to CVG if it wasn't for Comair. We all know that isn't true.

So does anyone have any word on what B6 intends on doing with those extra slots?

I know they want to start LGB-DEN, but because of the lack of slots, they were going to do DEN-OAK and connect it to LGB. Is DEN-LA that big of a market that it could support more flights?

Also .. someone brought up the possibility of LGB-EWR. would that work for B6? I know theyre looking at some EWR-Florida flights.

I know they want to start LGB-DEN,

I actually heard the opposite. I know the mgmt was looking at the route, and after crunching the numbers, they found out it would be unprofitable. This is probably because of the already low yields due to F9, and also the ultra-high costs of operating out of DEN.

You can actually listen to David Neeleman talking about it in one of the conferences at jetblue.com.

It was either 4Q 03 or 1Q 04...I'm not sure which one, but I'm positive it's in one of the conferences.

America West seems to dominate the PHX-LAX and LGB route with PHX their hub. I would love to see B6 start service from LGB to Mexico.

Dantiger,

don't expect us to start flying LGB-mexico (let alone any place that is international. LGB doesn't have any kind of customs/immigration department there. now OAK is another story since they have those facilities there. if theres gonna be service to/from mexico it would more than likely start either in JFK or florida (more likely FLL).
