30 September 2004

GB Airways, the British Airways franchise carrier, announced today (September 30, 2004) it is to open a new base at Manchester airport operating flights to Spain and the Canary Islands, Madeira, Cyprus and Malta.

The airline has also extended the franchise agreement with British Airways until March 2010.

The new services to Malaga in Spain and to Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Funchal in Madeira, Paphos in Cyprus and Malta will be operated by one Airbus A320 at Manchester increasing to three aircraft over the following two years.

From May 16, 2005, GB Airways will operate daily flights to Malaga, three weekly flights to Malta, two weekly flights to Paphos, a weekly flight to Funchal and a weekly flight to Tenerife (south), all destinations already served by the airline from London Gatwick. All flights will operate as British Airways services. Winter destinations have yet to be confirmed.

John Patterson, managing director GB Airways said: “I am delighted that we will start flights from Manchester. GB Airways has a long established partnership with British Airways and this new base will not only extend the British Airways network from Manchester but also create around 140 new jobs with GB Airways.

The extension of the franchise agreement to 2010 gives passengers and staff the reassurance that GB Airways will continue to offer British Airways services with all the benefits that you would expect from a full service airline at truly competitive fares. For the first time, customers in the North have a true alternative scheduled service to these popular sun-spots.”

David Evans, managing director, British Airways CitiExpress added: “This is great news for everyone in Manchester and the north. Now customers flying off on holiday and business will be able to take advantage of the British Airways terminal with the best lounges and facilities in the airport as well as having the reassurance of flying with British Airways. These flights will no doubt be very popular amongst our Executive Club members who travel using their BA Miles and want to fly direct.”

A 'W' pattern usually consists of 4 sectors, such as LGW-PMI-MAN-PMI-LGW, where the operating aircraft operates into and out of a different airport than the original departure airport. None of the AGP flights are 'W'. The MAN flights will be operated by a dedicated MAN based A320.

Mike

Is this a direct response to the Jet 2 announcements this week of setting up a base at Man? They too are flying to Malaga and in that thread someone actually questioned how long it would be until BA made an announcement! Just wondering if it has been in the pipeline long?

Will there be a good demand for their Club Class service on these routes from MAN which is where the cash is.

UK airlines make few "W" flights comparing to the Germans.

AIR MALTA, don't you think that TU should operate "W" flights from TBJ,SFA, and TOE, instead of the daily ferry flights (TU 9***) ?! It would save time and money, but this does not seem their occupation !!! They need to waste money !!!

Ts-ior,

that was my idea also. They could operate MIR-ORY-TOE-ORY-MIR and DJE-ORY-SFA-ORY-DJE but who cares at TU???

The Germans, champions of productivity per aircraft make double W flights per day.

Air-Berlin for example operates a single aircraft to a given destination from 3 German airports, but this require an early morning, dawn, departure and a late evening arrival. It doesn't matter as long as it is more profitable !!!

PAD-MIR-CGN-MIR-NUE-MIR-PAD. The 738 has the right for a 2/3hrs rest per day, and it gets ready for another Turkish or Spanish trip !!!

These are the airlines that want to succeed...

The eventual MAN-TUN service should be operated on Thursday as there is no UK connection on that day !!! An A320 would be sufficient...

BA had declared that MLA is a tourist destination and as such it is not feasible for them to start ops again to MLA. Unlike GB, BA's main source of income from the core ops is Business class and freight work.
