AA To End BOS-LAS And JFK-PHX

Sat Oct 02, 2004 1:03 am

American Airlines will end non-stop service on Boston-Las Vegas and New York City-Phoenix after 31 October 2004.

Boston-Las Vegas service was launched in December 2002, and has operated on an inconsitent schedule since then, some months not operating at all.

JFK-Phoenix was introduced about a year ago, in response to America West entering the New York City-California market.

I had a feeling JFK-PHX would get cut. With both HP and B6 now flying the route nonstop, there is enough capacity in the market. HP uses 757's in the market as well, so there are plenty of seats to go around. BOS-LAS...I don't know, it always seemed like AA added that one in response to Delta, who started that route with 763 service in the late 90's. Not a shocker to see that one go.

I guess I'm psychic. I wondered how come JFK-PHX lasted as long as it did. I always knew that American would have stopped their PHX service from JFK. Now, I will be psychic again and say the next possible route to go from JFK is SEA. My theory is, any transcon flight for American operated by a 757 from JFK is on it's last legs. However, the only exceptions are SJC & SAN, which will be here to stay, at least for the time being. I see these flights going from 2 flights a day to one. Wasn't AA about to start a second daily flight to PHX in the next couple of weeks?

Here is another strange question. Didn't AA just announce that they would be recalling flight attendant's for Boston & New York, I believe for JFK mostly, as well as other cities. Hopefully, they are obviously about to announce some new international destination(s) from both JFK & BOS. I guess we'll see in the next couple of days.

B6's JFK-SEA service operates at late hours and may not be particularly tough competition for AA.

According to David Neeleman at a meeting w/FA's and Pilots, SEA (along with SJC, SMF, and ONT) will see a second daily R/T in early spring on a seasonal basis. Then, there might be tough competition for AA (and DL)

Ahhh,

I remember in around 1984, flying JFK-PHX on a new 767. I was really looking forward to flying that airliners for the first time.

BOS-LAS was year round to start, but then went seasonal, ending last October/November and starting again in March or so. MAH, I do recall there was a month of no service in between these times, but that may have had more to do with the conversion of TWA 757s than anything.

The loads on the route were dreadful to start, but after a while it really picked up and the plane was going out packed every night. I don't understand why AA would eliminate that route as it utilizes a 757 that would otherwise sit overnight in BOS and is back in time for the early AM departures.

 Insane

B6 had nothing to do with AA's decision. As MAH pointed out, AA ran PHX-JFK in response to HP's new transcons. If anything, HP killed AA's JFK nonstop. AA simply couldn't profit on this route.

The only question is whether HP can add another flight with attractive prices to get some of those AA pax who want non-stop service to JFK.

Oh yes, I learned this one the hard way. I was booked on the nonstop flight to PHX from JFK then rec'd a call that it had been changed to a layover in DFW... I went so far as to start a thread, "The Nerve of AA" to keep pace with the other popular thread at the time, "The Nerve of Delta". As you can imagine I rec'd little sympathy from these forums, with the exception of the gentleman who started the Delta thread.

I liked the fact that AA had the nonstop PHX flight, as I am from there, and venture back twice a year. It allowed me to accumulate miles on my AA account, because I like to vacation in Europe and fly business class. This is terribly upsetting news....  Sad

Speaking of memories, Zrs70, I can remember flying on a TWA L1011 nonstop from JFK-PHX and back every summer on our way home from Jeddah. The days of PHX receiving widebody domestics are probably gone forever.

Unless you consider PHX-HNL as intl, we still get to see HA's beautiful 763's.

Doesn't BA fly a ORD-PHX or LAX-PHX 747? I thought I saw a BA widebody on the tarmac at PHX...it has been a while for me to connect in PHX though.

AA is dropping a few selected low yield routes, mostly one's flown with 757's, which are going to be needed in DFW over the next few months. AA has picked up a bigger US mail contract at DFW, plus the major DL pulldown dictates more 757 flying at DFW on selected markets, and maybe a few new ones as well. This is also one of the reasons why the new fall/winter schedules are taking longer to get loaded.

It's a BA 744, and it's direct LGW-PHX. That's why I threw in the caveat about domestic flights. I did not know about the Hawaiian flight though, that's good news!

BA flies PHX-LHR nonstop, so yes, you did see a 747 here in PHX.

Regarding AA dropping JFK-PHX, its interesting, AA got back into this market as a response to the America West transcons, and at the same time, DL dropped the JFK-PHX route, a route that it has flown for years, just as DL was announcing its JFK domestic expansion - an odd move. Now, AA is pulling JFK-PHX, leaving service on the route to the LCCs. (Note, CO flies EWR-PHX, same market, different airport).

Do you think DL or Song will re-enter the JFK-PHX market?

Finally! Jeez...and I'm sure that if AA doesn't transfer their JFK-LGB slots to other destinations, then JetBlue will add more JFK-LGB's in the future...

I don't understand why AA is dropping JFK-PHX. Isn't that market big? There isn't too much capacity anyway...I would have thought that with DL dropping the route, it'd be more attractive and a better performer for AA.

AA started BOS-LAS at the same time as MIA-LAS following National Airlines' demise (though I don't believe N7 flew BOS-LAS). Delta was not flying BOS-LAS at the time.

I believe also at one point that BA flew PHX-SAN as a continuation of their flight from LHR with a 744.

That is true, I believe that was when BA first started LHR-PHX.

MAH, thanks for the correction. In any case, BOS-LAS is well served by HP and Song. I guess the market could support another Thursday/Saturday/Sunday frequency, but you never know.

I dont see the SEA flight going anywhere. That is an AA route--it always has been.

As for JFK-PHX let's take bets on when DL will restart service--this time with Song.

"The days of PHX receiving widebody domestics are probably gone forever."

Beginning in Feb '05 DL will be flying 763's and 762's daily to/from ATL. Also like others have said the daily HA 763, and even the Airborne 762F's. We will still get a few domestic widebodies along with our BA 744. Does anyone know if that will ever go daily???

According to AA's website, AA will discontinue BOS-LAS on November 1, 2004 and will resume the route on December 16, 2004, the same date that AA resumes a lot of flying to the ski resorts in the Rockies.

My experience is that November and early December are slow in Las Vegas. There aren't a lot of big conventions, and leisure travelers don't arrive in large numbers until New Year's.

A few New Yorkers that I know tell me that Arizona is just not popular as a winter destination, as compared to Florida. If the Mets or the Yankees moved spring training to Arizona, then we might see a shift in winter travel.

BOS is my home airport. I know I can speak for quite a few people, myself included, that embraced Song to LAS. I used to fly AA and reg Delta to LAS but when since I flew there on Song I will never go any other way.

I didn't know the JFK-PHX route was doing so poorly. You never would have known it from the loads- the flights were full. A strange about-face after announcing they were going to have 2nd frequency this winter. Another case of high loads, low yields.

That was the plan, but now it is just being discontinued. Or at least it is not bookable on any date past 31 October 2004 on AA's website.

Dbo861: No. Because BA weren't able to sell seats between PHX and SAN. You could by tix for LGW-PHX or LGW-SAN but you couldn't book PHX-SAN and back.

AV8AJET: Well, considering you now have the 744 back without the SAN tag, I don't think it'll go daily anytime soon. BA could always put it back to a daily 777. Which do you prefer?  Big grin

Av Daily is reporting that the slots are going back to the airport. AA will not be using them somewhere else. So if others are right, JB will be getting these slots.
