Some Excitement At DAB

Sat Oct 02, 2004 5:02 am

A few interesting events happened today (Friday) at Daytona...

1) Most Notably, there was an accident/incident on 7R in which it appeared a single engine or light twin was off the side of the runway near or on taxiway sierra. It looks like the plane was facing westbound... We think it had a gear collapse or simply ran off the side of the runway?? Crash trucks were surrounding it for around an hour, but no ambulance came over so that appears to be good news. Anyone know what actually happened?

2) The Vacation Express 732 landed again to pick up 2 bus-loads of people under a police escort to the JetCenter... I'm guessing it's the Bethune Cookman football team??

3) Finally, there appeared to be an ex-Skywest EMB-120 at JetCenter with the exact livery minus the name on the tail... Looked like this:

Anyone have any more information???

When I got home around 5:30 the local news said that a 'kit plane' couldn't get all the gear down and did an emergency landing. I couldn't tell exactly what type of kit plane it was, but it looked like a light single engine, and it appeared to have at least the nose gear down. Pilot was okay.

In another related story, somewhere in the area, a mosquito control Hughes 500 lost engine power at 500' and landed in 5 feet of water. The video of that incident showed the helicopter on its side, mostly submerged.

I live about 1 mile south of DAB. Have any idea why I-95 was completely shut down from SR40 north?

1)...the incident was NOT an emergency landing... it just happened out of the blue and was believed to be a result of braking difficulty

2)The various 737 charters have been for the BCC football team of their visitors ( this will happen on a weekly or bi weekly basis this fall)

3) The EmB120 appeard to be an ex Skywest plane, and has been here before... they use the call sign "Sparkle"

4) the Southeast MD80 first picked up storm relief workers... then returned later in the day to drop off more, simmilar to the Midwest MD88's from the previous week.

The Vacation Express/Sky King 737-200 arrived at BWI from DAB, it did seem to have a college football team getting off. The Southeast MD80 operated a roundtrip DAB-BWI-DAB trip on Thursday, but I have no idea why.
