What Is This? (Ugliest Livery!)

Sat Mar 04, 2000 7:08 am

Just what is this thing on this BWIA 737-800, it looks like an automobile's hubcap!

Really - even if it is something else, it doesn't look very nice! Kind of like putting an umbrella on there or something, sure it's an object but... what for?!

I personally don't thinks it is ugly...but it's not a hubcap!!!

It's a musical instrument! Actually the West Indies and other islands of the caribbean area are know for them. I wish I'd remember the name of it...it's a the tip of my tounge. Steel drums? I don't remember...sorry.

But yeah once again not ugly at all...better that going all white with a pretty tail

I believe the instrument in question in known as a steel pan. This unique form of percussion is a Caribbean legend...what better symbol for BWIA? I don't think it looks bad at all.

I believe the first steel pans were old oil drums that were meticuluously cut and shaped. The steel pan has a very distinctive sound that is known throughout the Caribbean.

I like the paint scheme very much. BWIA keep up the good work! The ugliest paint scheme is British Airways world and union jack logos. Virgin did a better job in representing the U.K

I agree with 747-600X. It is pretty ugly. It may be different and eye catching, but ugly all the same. I am not sure if it's better or worse than the old scheme, which was getting very dated.

I for one, loved the BA schemes. It was a breath of fresh air from their stuffy old image. Safe and conservative perhaps, but a bit more appeal to the young and a fresh outlook on things were provided by the new scheme. It was impossible to produce tails that everyone likes, but they did their job in representing the various cultures from where they originated. Well done to them I say. Too bad they succumbed to pressure and reverted to having the Union Flag on their planes, which by the way is also a nice tail.

i think the ugliest is areoflots, I saw pictures of yak42s that had the lines panted on jagged you could tell that someone just came up and painted it with a brush. Also some of brittish airways new ones are ugly, and also american airlines, Why did they leave all theyre planes silver?

I think BWIA's new livery IS the ugliest I have ever seen - that green is just awful...let alone the rather absurd design.

I agree, it is quite hideous, but at the same time unusual. BWIA obviously wants there airplanes to stand out.

More Commentary (Where Is BWIA?)

Sun Mar 05, 2000 8:48 am

This new livery of BWIAs is ugly because its CYAN! Who uses CYAN (well... there's always that weird Internet sight Airliners.Net which uses shades of it for just about everything...)? But still, the shade of it they are using is like baby blue cyan, if that makes any sense. It's a very artificial color. American, however, is beautiful. The silver is unique, unmatched on any airline. I just love the reflections all over. By the way, where is BWIA based?

BWIA have a great scheme, much better then boring colours like Air France, Delta, American, United, and all those white schemes.

I was in the Uk in January and saw the L1011 9Y-TGN do a go around right in front of me. The new colours are very special.

What?!

Sun Mar 05, 2000 6:36 pm

They're 'special' all right....and yes they're different to the Delta's and American and stuff, which also have very boring schemes, I agree, but that doesn't made BWIA's anything less than hideous. I wouldn't want to come face to face with a BWIA in the middle of the night. I shiver thinking about it.

This is apparently a very controversial livery... just think, we'll have a peaceful concourse at an airport someday, and all of a sudden a BWIA will pull up and just out of nowhere there'll be a brawl with people hurtling chairs and carry on baggage at each other!

So... does any one know where BWIA is based?
