Missing Routes From MSP

Sun Oct 03, 2004 12:35 pm

I've thought for a while now these cities could support NW/NW Airlink Service from MSP:

FAT
CAK
BTV
CRW
ELP
GSO
HSV
LEX
BUR
TLH
PBI

Your thoughts?

I think the bigger void in the otherwise massive list of nonstops for MSP would have to be trans-oceanic and/or international flights. To that end, I offer:

Realistically: (by virtue of codeshares mostly)
Paris-CDG
Frankfurt
Mexico City
Seoul

Maybe, but unlikely:
Osaka-KIX
Hong Kong
Rome

On crack:
Copenhagen
Prague
Cardiff (I just had to  Smile)

Yes, as far as International destinations missing CDG, Frankfurt, MEX and Seoul seem reasonable.

Just off the top of my head I am thinking CDG, ARN and FRA for international. I think they tried the Scandinavian routes a while back but maybe they did not work out back then.

I can see the reasoning for ARN. I do think that BUR is a good choice for many airlines to get some extra LA PAX, as people from LA like me always like to fly out of BUR. Unfortunately, NIMBYs are winning in the cause for a new terminal. I think that FAT is insane, I would take a winter in MSP over FAT (even though my parents met in Fresno, it has been considered the worst city in the US for years). Some of the others are not bad ideas, but would probably not be served by airlink, rather DC-9 Link =)

MSP does have service to GSO. Pinnacle serves it with the CRJ. I definitely think that NWA needs another connection to Europe, they're stupid for not doing so. Germany would probably be the best bet, maybe even France.

i think it's crazy that NW hasn't added MSP - PBI service. there is certainly a demand for it here in south florida.

My prediction: Won't be long before MSP has nonstops to AF's hub at CDG. Other than that, look for new international nonstops to Asia before any additional to Europe.

Add this city to the not serve list.
NW does NOT serve ISP thru MSP or DTW or MEM. I haven't figured out why.
There is a large population within 25 miles of the airport.

A few FWA flights would be nice and in fact I believe the last AIR21 grant there was put toward that effort.

NW could put a spare DC-10 on MSP-CDG  Wink/being sarcastic . Actually, it may end up being an AF flight.
All flights have great IFE...get yourself a window seat, thats something no PTV can beat! flew 808 Pacific an Atlanic

NWA is currently looking at the numbers of having NWA fly MSP-CDG vs AF flying the route...depending on the outcome of the cost and such, that will be the deciding factor. As of last week the MSP-CDG was leaning towards NWA for 2005 start.

FAT?

BFL seems more of a likely candidate. Especially with CO flying from there to IAH.

I agree with the ARN flight that would be very nice or non-stop to CPH. The only problem is that that cuts the Iceland Air serivice.

But I would loive a AF connection to CDG or even MRS.

MSP does have service to GSO, they have 1 or 2 dailies depending on demand with either the CRJ or ARJ.

I agree that a MSP-HKG is needed. A nice A380 acquisition would be able to support MSP-BKK as well.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy And also, due to the popularity of flights to MNL, an MSP-MNL direct wouldn't be so bad either.

FAT - NW is not a major player in secondary West Coast markets, and they are not going to dedicate an A319 to operating this route so not likely
CAK - Could be possible in the future.
BTV - this flight operates on Saturdays seasonally (CRJ)
CRW - not likely, you'd see CRJ's to DTW first.
ELP - not too likely, although NW recently started MEM-McAllen, TX.
GSO - already exists
HSV - may be possible with a CRJ in the future
LEX - also could be possible
BUR - not likely as its a long route into an area NW is relatively weak in that would require a A319. Even DTW
TLH - not likely, NW is not a major player here, DL stronghold
PBI - operates seasonally

The major factor being that NW is hestitant to open up new stations domestically with mainline equipment. This means if its outside the range of the CRJ, then its not likely. NW only has about 25 more CRJ's coming, through spring of 2005. Cities that are likely are those that already have service to 2 NW hubs as they are focused on connecting the hubs. If they lie between 2 NW hubs then its very likely they will be connected at some point in the future.

As for international, NW has repeatedly said that DTW is their primary international gateway. DTW is the launch point for both European and Asia flights. MSP WILL NOT see service to any of these points unless it is already served from DTW. Thus the next likely route as mentioned is MSP-CDG.

There are many other routes that you'd likely see first: DTW-SJC, DTW-PDX (year-round), MEM-PDX, DTW-HNL (year-round).

This biggest point being, what additional connecting opportunies does MSP offer versus those that go through DTW. At that point is when it becomes advantagous to overfly DTW for MSP to open up new connecting opportunities.

Bottom line involving MSP-CDG... two words.. FORGET IT...

Its not going to happen as all of the European destined traffic goes through AMS now, and even with the addition of SkyTeam, will continue to route CDG bound traffic through DTW. NW will continue to drop as many routes as possible and turn them over to other carriers - mainly KL and AF.

I keep hearing about PDX to Amsterdam as a possible future routing in 2005. Do you think this route will ever come to fruition?

PBI - operates seasonally

NW does not operate any non-stop flights to PBI from MSP at any time during the year. they should!......but they don't.

>>I agree that a MSP-HKG is needed<<

NWA used to fly MSP-HKG in the early '90's, which was why the crosswind runway was lengthened (don't know the runway designation)....

Historically, NW has operated PBI - MSP on Saturdays only during the winter season.

Actually, TWFirst, was 4-22 ever lengthened? It's a good-sized runway now, but I thought it had been under study but subsequently never expanded to the required length for unrestricted nonstop HKG service. I do, however, recall a time when MSP-HKG did exist (which is why I put it on my "maybe, not likely" list), but I thought that because it was weight-restricted did the study take place.

Per the DTW being the current NW-center-of-the-universe comment earlier (and perhaps this belongs in its own thread), does DTW's plans to build a new Smith Terminal in the face of MSP's rather gratuitous 20/20 vision (which is very pro-SkyTeam by comparison) weigh into NW's enthusiasm as to which hub city gets what service? Just wondering if anyone thinks this is posturing on MSP's part to play less of a second fiddle to NW's amazing facilities in Detroit.

Mike:

It believe it was lengthened on the SW end. As I recall, NW wanted it even longer. I could be mistaken though.

well, i guess that rules out all NW expansion here.....

How about OAK? They have no NW service, maybe an MSP-OAK route. I think that maybe a FAT flight could work, the population base is certainly there.

N1120a- How can you say FAT is the worst city in the USA? I can think of a few cities that make FAT look like Malibu. Worst drivers? maybe. Worst city? I don't think so.
