Non-Pax Beyond Pittsburg Security?

Mon Oct 04, 2004 1:51 am

If I remember correctly, Pittsburg ariport allow non-ticketed passengers to go beyond security checkpoint. I was wondering if they still allow? Has the businesses such as store have improved thier economy situation? I apologize if this has been discussed before.

Thanks so much

Non-Pax Beyond Pittsburg Security?

Pittsburgh airport was not the only one that allowed non-pax to go to the gate. Most airports in the US used to allow this until 9/11 and frankly, they still should. Everyone goes through security and an airline wont let someone on with no ticket, so it should not be an issue. It is actually a hit to many airport businesses at places like LAX where they were built inside security

Non-Pax Beyond Pittsburg Security?

#1: it's Pittsburgh
#2: Up till when I moved from PIT two months ago, ticketed pax were the only people still allowed pass security. However, the airport was trying to work with the TSA to allow non-tkted, security screened individuals to enter the Airmall during "off-peak" times. If this were to happen, my guess is that it will still not be for quite some time, and probably result in bringing back checking ID's at the gate again.

To answer your second question, if I recall correctly, a handful of stores did in fact close since the mall was shut off to the non-flying public. However, last time I was there, some store was getting ready to open. I want to say it was on the side over by the Gap. All I know is this, even in the years prior to 9/11, there was always a sale going on at any of the major chain sotres (Gap, Victoria's Secret, OfficeMax/Staples, etc.) Made for some cut-rate last minute holiday shopping for me many times. I don't know why this is, but I can only imagine that it was to move product that didn't seem to be flying off the shelves. Maybe someone at PIT can help out a bit more, espicially with the store openings/closings.

I think a major issue at most airports is the wait times for security screening if they were to allow non-ticketed people through the checkpoint. The majority of airports wouldn't be able to handle more people trying to go through security. The lines would be too long (as if they weren't long enough).

God no! Its too crowded on the concourses as it is already. I wouldnt be a supporter opening up the concourses to non-ticketed pax again.

Until the Mall at Robinson opened in 2001-2002, the Airmall at PIT was the closest mall for many shoppers in the West Hills (if they chose not to drive to Beaver Valley). Due to state law, the stores at the airport, like GAP and Victoria's Secret, have to charge the same for items as the store at the mall. So a pair of jeans at the Airport Gap cost the same as a pair from the mall.

The stores sold the same items as the stores in the mall. They are not used to sell products that weren't selling at the regular stores. Yes, many times the stores have sales, but they follow along with the sales at the mall.

There were many times, pre-9/11 where friends and I would go to PIT, eat at TGIFridays and watch planes take off and taxi in, and then walk up and down the concourses and go people watching. I miss those days.

Yeah, tell me about it. I used to ride the 28X out from Oakland, walk around all day watching whatever there was to see, maybe return a few luggage carts to get a sandwich. Now, talk about a totally no-cost day that was tons of fun.

Nope, never been there but almost flew into PIT one time on the way to BTV. But the thing is, we flew on UA and that was 1992.
