International<->Domestic Connections In Japan

Tue Oct 05, 2004 4:50 pm

I want to find out about the preference of both Japanese/non-Japanese passengers when flying to/from Japan when it comes to connecting to domestic services. From what I gathered, in the UK, passengers from MAN or GLA would rather transit in continental Europe (or beyond) for their medium/longhaul flights, or direct from their local airports whenever possible. So this translates to a preference on SQ's MAN-SIN-SYD over BA's MAN-LHR-SIN-SYD.

Drawing the same analogy for Japan, does this happen for passengers from 'smaller' Japanese airports when it comes to international connections? Yes KIX receives a large number of international connections that would rival NRT, but for destinations not served directly from the home airport, would people from (or flying to) OSA/NGO/FUK/CTS/SDJ/etc fly via KIX/NRT, or prefer to connect in a foreign airport, in particular HKG, ICN, SIN and LAX?

best regards,

EDIT: I want to find out about the general preference of passengers (rather than personal), and if there's a difference between Japanese and non-Japanese. So please don't move this to Av Polls and Prefs Forum.
Smile Cheers.

Connecting from overseas to provincial airports within Japan is appalling. KIX has cut-back basically to none and NRT lacks any except to only major Japanese markets.
Until the opening of the Centrair in Nagoya will int'l to domsetic connection be feasible at the same airport. Otherwise, it's probably the best to connect at ICN with OZ or KE.

For people looking for the cheapest way to overseas destinations from Japan, OZ or KE is the choice. Non-stop flights from Japan are typically very expensive particularly during heavy travel periods.

I think the KE schedule is worth looking at. They serve more int'l routes from Japan than ANA or JAL (that is variety of airports) For instance pax from Okayama see not flight to KIX or NRT from there, so they'd rather take KE to ICN and transit from there.

When the Haneda airport several years ago still saw BR and CI service, some pax travelled through TPE. As for me, I live right next to KIX but some of my friends always transit through a foreign country

1. Its cheaper
2. If its NRT, the traffic congestions is (generally throughout the whole day) bad so that flys experience delays frequently.

I hope this helps!!!

I am flying FRA-NGS next week, then NGS to SIN. Originally I was flying FRA-NGO, 2hour layover, then All Nippon NGO-NGS. Return was NGS-KIX, KIX-SIN. Then All Nippon changed the time of the flight NGO-NGS ( and NEVER contacted me) and I would misconnect, unless I wanted to wait 7 hours in NGO.

So then I moved to:

FRA-KIX, KIX-NGS, NGS-KIX, KIX-SIN. Then All Nippon dropped KIX domestic service.

So now I am:

Connecting from International to domestic is horrible in Japan. The Tokyo and Osaka have an international airport and a domestic one, and not close to each other, especially with traffic by bus. It is a nightmare going to a domestic destination other then KIX or NRT. When I can I try toi take a non Japanese airline from a smaller city to a foregin airport. At least you transfer in the same airport. KE has very few flights from NGS to Seoul, so I cannot count on that route. Often the lack of domestic/international connections cause me to spend an extra day going and coming from Japan. Very frustrating, and expensive.

just in terms of the japan-australia market, there has been a significant increase in the use of 6th freedom airlines.

i think the maturity of the market has a major role.

for a group led market, they tend to do the 'safe' option, or as they are told.

as the market matures, they find other avenues of getting from A to B.

CX, TG, OZ, KE, and even SQ and Mh have done well from serving multiple points in both countries..

I fly from Wichita, KS to Okinawa and with the dropped flights, it was getting difficult to find a good schedule for my trip last summer. I have always used Kansai Airport and when I flew to Okinawa in the late 90s it was never difficult to find good schedules there since Northwest used to offer a lot of flights between the US and Osaka. Now that Northwest has reduced it to Detroit and Hawaii, it's become harder. Also, Northwest's DTW-KIX flights arrive in KIX later and KIX-DTW leaves KIX early so they don't really work anymore. I came close to going through NRT but realized I could try AA and JAL through DFW, LAX, and KIX so I booked that. However, AA notified me that ANA changed their scheduling on KIX-OKA and left too early to connect from the LAX flight. So I had to rebook on United who offers ICT-ORD-KIX-OKA (ORD-KIX wasn't announced until after I booked the original tickets on AA) which worked out very well. It was a pleasant trip and it helped out a lot that United codeshares and interlines with ANA. No need to check in again in KIX.

I definitely agree that it's getting more difficult to connect to domestic flights in Japan but hopefully the new Central Japan International Airport will help that out a bit when it opens. Next time I go to OKA, I'll put that into consideration. The connecting flights to/from OKA don't seem to work out currently but hopefully JAL and ANA will redo their scheduling for the new airport to connect international passengers.
