Libya To Buy 777 And 330

Wed Oct 06, 2004 12:59 am

I read on Bloomberg that Libya will be buying a mix of 777 and A330. They're planning a total buy or about 24 aircraft for about $1.5 bn. I was unable to paste the link but I did see the story. No word on when they're be delivered or even when they will sign contracts.

A very politically correct move I would say!

Indeed a very correct political move...obviously B 777-200ER and A 330-200 variants...the A 320 will remain in their fleet as the short haul variant.

Has anyone been to Tripoli airport in the last 3-4 years? If so how is it for transitting pax etc?

$ 1.5 billion means a minimum of 10 B 777s and A 332s combined at list prices or 13-16 at discounted prices !!! I think that the A 320 order too would be included in this figure.

i was there about 2 weeks ago
airport terminal is not too bad but immigration is still a very slow and antiquated experience, for crew member at least
we regularly have to wait 2 hours for all the passport details to be hand written on immigration forms which also have to be given in at the hotel
not sure about pax but i think it will be the same

What a heard is that Lybia's extensive secret agent network in the Middle East was really helpfull after 9-11..

I think my "mate" Gadaffi realised after what happened in Iraq that the US and Britian went through there with out stopping to breath that he could be next and suddendly realised that westernisation is a "good thing"

So now he needs help and support and what better way than to buy american and european planes, but not rom one manufacturer, but from both to be all PC and to hand over his weapons.

What routes will they operate with these planes?

Any idea any one?

Politically correct choice, though. But somewhat odd, A340s are a better match for A332s.

...buying 777s is just to make pleasure to Washington as LAA is already using A320s and the appropriate choice would be to continue buying different Airbus types...

772ER and 332s have the same duty and the same market, so why going to Seattle ?!

Well, timing just don't fit, he started cooperating before Afghanistan & Iraq.

772ER and 332s have the same duty and the same market .
Many airlines think 772 and 332 are a good combination. CX, AF, KL, EK and others.. 772 is significant bigger/longer range..

Ahmed,

B777-200ER and A330-200 are different classes of aircraft. The B772 has much more capacity than the A332. So a mix of both makes sense.

Udo,

OK i'm wrong in my comparison, but when we are new in the long-haul market, it is better to start with a reduced capacity, and i think that the A332 is the best offer of the moment. Imagine if somethings happens on earth and TU orders long-hauliers, i'm sure it will be A332s...

KEESJE,

Cathay operate A330-300s and 777-200s...no A330-200s I'm afraid....though it would be nice.

But somewhat odd, A340s are a better match for A332s.

Not sure where you've been for the last half-decade or so, but MANY airlines are choosing to pair various derivatives of A330 and 777 together; quite a few to the exclusion of A340s.

So thats the 3rd (potentially) order for the A332 and two new customers of late. And i thought Airbus had already sold up and began specialising in tooth pick manufacturing as they couldn't compete with the 7e7  Insane.

Strange decision in that both type aircaft are longhaul and so far none of the maghreb companies ( exept som minor RAM sectors to USA and Canada) have attracted hughe intercontinental business. I would have thought a mix of A 320's or Boeings 737-NG plus some A 330's or 7E7's would have been a wiser choice. Where the hack would all the Lybian's want to fly anyhow other than to Rome for shopping ????

A332s now, instead of waiting for the A350 or 7E7 is my guess. Utilizing the 777 as a their flagship is just plane smart - pun intended.

As others have pointed out. . .the 777 and the A330 seem to compliment each other making for a great pair for many airlines obviously. . .so much for Airbus's commonality sales point. Airlines will do whatever they feel is best. Sometimes commonality tactics work. . .in this case, well, they didn't. . .

Overall, it's nice to see an airline and a country making smart decisions in regards to the future. Other countries should take note.

----------------------------------------------
as many people pointed out, 777 and 332 mix seems to be quite sensible. Do remember that the 332s and 777s arent necessarily just for intercontinental routes, as they have the added attraction of being able to carry far more cargo than say a 737NG or A320. So it wouldn't be surprising if they used this the way EK does (Good example: DXB-BAH is a 777, simply because cargo makes for good income), and seeing them in many a European capital. Plenty of other airlines do this (LX amongst others).

If you look at airlines such as KU,SV,MS, etc, they also tend to use 777s and A330s for intra-Mideast/Maghreb flights. KWI-CAI is (i think) served by Widebodies something like (at least) 4 times a day, and this isnt necessarily the biggest city pair in the Mideast.

Just my thoughts, feel free to bash and discuss  Smile

So it wouldn't be surprising if they used this the way EK does

Have to wait and see what sorta MTOWs they specify, that'd be a good indication of whether they intend to do this or not.

SQ doesn't typically use its highest-MTOW 772ERs on the regional routes, and QF has found that 'abusing' A332s on shorthauls didn't exactly turn their financial crank they way they'd hoped.

From : ATWONLINE.COM

Of the orders, 21 will be for aircraft in the 737/A320 family size range and the remaining three will be widebodies--possibly A330-200s or 777-200ERs. For political reasons, it is possible that the order will be split between Airbus and Boeing.

Long-haul operations to Bangkok, Beijing, Karachi, Manila, Delhi, New York and Rio de Janeiro will start as soon aircraft are available.

"I'm very optimistic that we will have traffic rights to the US in a short time," the Director added.
