If (when) DL Mainline Pulls Out Of CLE.....

Wed Oct 06, 2004 10:13 am

I was wondering since AA M/L left CLE, I was wondering if DL(when) is having any plans to pull out of CLE. I heard from a DL employee that DL loads in CLE were sluggish.

Its not about loads. Its about yield.

Anyway CLE is actually getting a boost in the number of seats to ATL as 2 flights are being upgraded to M88.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

That suprises me. With CO's downsizing, with US at PIT downsizing, with HP gone at CMH, with STL downsized. All these midwest hubs downsized CLE demand should be up.

Don't look for Grinstein to shift more mainline flying between major cities and Atlanta to ASA or Comair. He saw what happened at DFW.

I see no idea why DL mainline would leave. They have more flights from CLE than both Comair and Blue Ridge combined. The majority of the station is mainline.

I understand one of the main reasons that AA did this was to switch to an all eagle operation, i.e. pay rates for employees. Similar to what US has done to certain stations, switch to all express and then gradually add back some mainline flights as is allowed in the contract. All the benefits with out the pay.

I was flying to ATL from CMH connecting thru CLE on CO about 4 weeks ago and heard the FA and a pax talking about why they had changed the CLE-ATL route to an ERJ. The older man was complaining that the "plane was small, why can't they fly a bigger one like Delta?" She told him she heard that it would be upgraded at least once a day and that others, I imagine that one MSY flight, would be upgraded as well. The CLE-ATL flight is always packed.

I don't think Delta would ever pull out their mainline flying from Cleveland, especially to Atlanta. Delta uses mainline jets from Atlanta to every major city they fly to. If they could have 8 mainline flights a day to Savannah, which is relatively close to ATL, CLE has nothing to worry about.
