What To Do With US FF Miles?

Thu Oct 07, 2004 1:17 am

Hello everybody.

I Have about 85,000 miles on Us Airways and now since their Future looks grim is there any Airline that has a mile exchange program? (IE. Could I roll them over to United For instance?) If any body has info on this drop me a line.

About the only thing I have found is to reserve a flight for next year, or whenever, through US, but on a Star Alliance member. Later on you can change the dates/times/etc., for a small fee. I doubt that you'll be able to deposit the miles into your ff account with the SA member, but you can always try.

I haven't found any other way to convert US miles into anything else without losing 75% of them in the process. If anyone does know a better way, please post it here, there are a lot of US ff pax would be grateful.

In the past when Airlines liquidated I think other airlines have taken on their frequent flyer members along with the miles from the dead airline. Sort of makes good marketing sense to continue that practice in the likely event US goes belly up.

And you'd feel safer rolling your miles over to UA? Come on people, stop being so paranoid, US Airways will pull through this financial crisis (as will UA and DL), like they have every other!

Pray? lol

Seriously, though. It's a safe bet that no airlines will take your miles. I think Contrails said it best. Just reserve a trip on a Star Aliance member through US, and if you want to change the dates and times later for a small fee, go for it. Un-fortunatly, though, Your out of luck when US goes belly up sometime next year.

Check out the US Airways forum at FlyerTalk...a few good threads on that, and with information coming straight from the mouth of B. Ben Baldenza, who runs DM.

As for mile transfers, you can do points.com and transfer them to AA, HP, AS, and a few others. First transfer is free. Keep in mind that the conversion ratio is horrible.

As for miles, they're fine until December/January. After February, I might be doubting U's existance, but until then, I'd fly them (I just booked a trip on them last week to go to Boston next week, and if I have any other travel needs this year, U will get a serious look).

2 suggestions:

One would be to take a blow-out trip, say business class to Australia for example, or First class to Europe.

Another is to ask if US Air solicits donations to charities. A number of airlines will accept mileage donations for organizations such as the Make a Wish Foundation. They may be able to use them in the short term before (or better to say if) US goes "glug-glug."

See if you can use them to purchase things, like magazine subscriptions, I have done that numerous times, my post man hates me......
