Whose Tail Is This?

Thu Oct 07, 2004 9:37 am

I wasn't even born when this pic was taken at MZJ back in 1976. The tail all the way on the right.. whose livery is that? I've never seen it before.

not sure what airline it may be but if it helps it looks like it could be an Airbus 300 or 310 by the way the tail cone looks like.

OPNLguy,
not sure it is a DC-8 because by the way the pic was taken, the tail looks too high...thats why i suggested it be an A300/A310.

Not a prob... I've been looking at these beasts for longer than I care to recall. After Braniff-1 went under in 1982, they had a slew of their old DC-8s parked here, and after driving right by them every day for what seems like a year or two, I can't get the shape(s) out of my mind...  Big grin

B6FA4ever:
Exactly how many A-300s were produced back in 1976? And how many A-310s? I doubt one would be parked in Arizona by then, even if the A-310 had existed.

True, but using the same logic, who would have expected to see a pair of L1011s parked in the desert back then?  Big grin

By process of elimination, I thought it was close to a DC8, but I wasn't absolutely sure. It obviously isn't a 707 tail or even a 747. The 757 and 767 weren't around neither. I never thought it was an Airbus.

There is always a possibilty that the photographer has the year wrong. I thought that may have been the case also. Now, for sure, it's pretty obvious that everything is correct.  Big grin

Those two L-1011s look like WN's ugly color scheme. Funny, eh??

They were only there because Court Line, who operated them out of LTN, went bust. They were cool colours back in them '70s. Big grin

A300 / A310 are wide bodyed two engined aircraft

Not narrow bodyed four engined aircraft.

So i dont quite understand how you can get them confused.

Please explain ???

Incidentally, does anyone know what happened to G-BAAA and G-BAAB, the L-10s in this picture?

By the way, gregster, we are looking at the picture at the top of the thread and talking about the aircraft you can't see. The point is that it is hard to tell what aircraft it is from that picture. I think seeing the other picture of the Air Spain DC-8 clears up any doubts though.

Access, I know......I was pointing out that the colors of the two L-1011s looked like WN's ugly color scheme.

we got the point airframeAS

Like someone said, paint is faded with logos and titles removed. I wish airlines nowadays had "ugly" colors anywhere near those, and that looks nothing like WN either, besides that's 1976 the year I was born. Everything was colorful back then Big grin
