British Airways Orders.

Fri Oct 08, 2004 12:50 am

Hello all,

I was wondering;

How many aircraft British Airways has on order?
What types?
How many of each type?
When are the aircraft are supposed to be delivered?

Apart from some outstanding A320/321 deliveries, nothing, until around 2010 for a 767 replacement, which I would guess at being a 7E7/A350 competition.

A319s are new, most 777's delivered between 1996-2001, true some 747-436s are 15 years old, but many are a lot younger, in any case, BA flew 747-136s that were 25-29 years old in the late 1990's.

As said before just eh outstanding Airbus orders, BA is pretty set for the next few years fleet wise, no major orders should be made anytime soon.

They'll order the A380 before 2010.

IMO not suprising would be:
- A380 for JFK, SIN like services. Just like AF, LH, SQ and other major BA competitors (QF?!).
- 332´s for Middle East/ African routes and increasing / extending North America frequencies. Just like AF, LH, KL and other major BA competitors.

7E7/350s perhaps if are willing/can afford to wait.

What are BA going to do at a regional level? All the DASH 8 fleet are due for retirement within the next 12 months with no anouncements regarding their replacement to date!

I can't see BA ordering the A330-200, especially not for the middle eastern routes, as these are already operated by 744 and 772 a/c, an A332 is too small.

I would expect a decision on a 744 replacement within the next 5 years, between the 773 and the 380. The 772s should be around for some time, the 763 and 752 will leave the fleet, with no replacememt, the 772 being the smallest long haul a/c. Short haul will be 321s/320s/319s.

Well I surely hope the 767´s leave the fleet at least the ones used for Longhaul, there are in really bad shape. They are still running with the old style Club seats which are literally falling apart and WT has no PTV.

BA have stated that their primary goal is to reduce their debt before they consider buying new aircraft.

Anyway, I wouldn't discount the A380 being bought, but I doubt JFK would ever see it. BA prefer a near shuttle-like service with 7 flights, with hourly flights starting from 2001-2300. Maybe one frequency, but BA forego 100% full flights in favour of frequency which appeals to business travellers, which BA go after.

The 767s are a tough replacement since their longest route is probably LHR-DXB with LHR-ACC, EBB, and BWI being near that as well. Most of the other routes are routes like LHR-NCE, DME, ATH, and BCN and others that are as short as LHR-FRA and LHR-BRU. In a nutshell, most of BAs 767 routes are no more than 4.5 hours. I think BA would be more interested in a shorter-range 7E7 or A350.

All the B767 fleet is to undergo a complete cabin refit.

Given BA's policy of A narrowbody and B widebody, I would guess they will go with the 7E7 at some point. Also, and I know they have some GE-90 777s, the will probably have a problem with no RR option on the 773ER. I could see them as a major 747ADV customer if they build it

BA has no such 'policy'. They buy whatever works best for them, no matter who builds it. If Airbus builds a plane that is better suited for BA's long-haul fleet than the competing Boeing product, you bet BA will buy it. Same for Boeings on short haul.

Which suggests they have no immediate plans to get rid of them. I flew on one of the "old" ones to Moscow in August, and I have to say it wasn't that bad.

I think BA will wait till the 7E7 is in service before considering it and the A350 (if built) as a replacement. I am certain that they will order A380s though.

A319/A321 are the only outstanding deliveries I believe with the 321s due to arrive over the next few months. They will op from T4 at LHR.

The B767s are op in 2 configs; short-haul (into Europe) and long-haul (as I think someone has already posted). The L/H 76s are due to be 'dusked' (upgraded to new BA products) starting I think in Jan '05. They will be in 3 class (Club World - World Traveller Plus - World Traveller) config. Those that are still in 'Utopia' liveries will also receive 'Chatham' tails at the same time.

Given the interior upgrade I would expect these to be around for a good few years yet and agree that BA will probably wait until 7E7/A350 are both firmed up in terms of design, if not in actually in service, before making a decision. I think a 7E7 order for L/H 767 replacement is a good possibility; even 772s are too big for some of the longer/thinner routes that the 76s serve at the moment. S/H 767 is trickier; the 763 is really too big for what BA need S/H wih their emphasis on frequency (though cargo like it because it can carry a/c pallets).

The other reason to hang on to the 76s is because the market for 2nd hand a/c is not too goo at the moment (not surprisingly!) and as an added disadvantage BA's were the only 763s with RR engines (tho' I think QF now have some ex-BA 763s).

Again as already stated, BA is focussing on reducing its debt (much of which was bult up with the B772 & Airbus re-fleet) so another reason there is unlikely to be any new orders in the next 2-4 years I guess.

After that it will be replacements for some of the older 744s; whether that will be 773, 744Adv or A380 is anyone's guess.

Why would BA purchase A380s to chuck them onto the JFK route??You can already get there for peanuts most of the year. The first routes would be most likely to India.

Yes, the 767's are being 'Dusked'

My quote about no orders until a 767 replacement around 2010 is from a conversation with someone involved in fleet planning.
