DL Announces CLT To JFK And LGA.

Fri Oct 08, 2004 1:10 am

ATLANTA, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Delta Connection (NYSE: DAL - News) will offer Charlotte, N.C., customers not one, but two options for non-stop travel to New York this winter.
Beginning Dec. 1, Delta Connection carrier Comair will offer three daily non-stop flights from Charlotte to New York's La Guardia Airport. On Jan. 31, 2005, Comair will offer one daily non-stop flight to Delta's international gateway at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.

I suspect that the fares available on CLT-JFK will be heavily restricted so that it is really not a viable O&D option. JFK-ORD on OH is like that now.

Interesting to see that DL changed their mind a little bit on this service. A month ago when they announced the restructuring plan, they announced JFK-CLT 2x daily and nothing else. Now, they are launching CLT-LGA 3x daily, but dropping JFK down to 1x daily just to do the international feed.

I think the CLT-JFK route will do ok. However, I doubt DL will have much luck on CLT-LGA....USAirways is too dominant on this route. The only way it would work would be if US fails.

Airtran should start CLT-ATL, BWI, MCO, TPA, FLL.
No competition besides USAir on any of these nonstops except ATL with Delta.

I am glad to see the competition on this route. I hope the fares fall as a result. US Airways was charging close, if not over for some flight times a $1,000.00 round trip from CLT to LGA and that's with staying over a Saturday night. They know a lot of bankers take this route and so they gouge them. It's not right.

Sure it is. It's called capitalism. If they can fill the planes then they ought to charge whatever people will pay. US isn't a charity.

Another hallmark of capitalism is that a different carrier can start service and undercut US's fares.

I am one of the business people that takes that flight and it is generally $1,200+ for a walk up R/T flight. I am suprised it took so long for another carrier to come in. Another situation where other carriers are going after USAirways.

I wholeheartedly agree. The point is that US' previous behavior was not inherently unfair.

DL isn't interested in this market from a profit/loss standpoint.

It's could be a number of things.

They plan to discount fares in this market so USAir will lose a load of revenue defending their market share weakening them further.

They feel USAir is on it's last legs and want to get in there before anyone else does.

Or USAir is discounting some premium Delta market and this is pay back.

DL is going to have a hard time gaining business travelers from US without a premium product. F on a 321 vs. a CRJ is a no-brainer for me. US also has so much capacity on CLT-NYC (15 dailies mainline, 1 express) that DL is going to have a hard time being competitive and making money at the same time given the huge capacity advantage that US has. A quick look at US' fares for travel in late November/early December reveals that fares are quite reasonable.

The fares are over $650 before DL starts service, then after they do they drop to just below $200. They price gouge big time. I don't consider there current fares reasonable at all.

I priced a trip in CLT-LGA in early December with no Saturday night stay and the price was $192. Obviously, with less advance purchase the fares go up, but that's the nature of the beast. I certainly consider that reasonable.

I do also, but after Dec. 1st is when DL shows up and lowers the fares.

US isn't a charity

Their financial statements resemble a not-for-profit organization.

I think this will be good news for people in CLT and NYC that travel between the two cities for tourism, see family, etc. US Airways does have high fares generally into LGA. DL is smart to start this route in time for the Christmas rush.

The feed into JFK for International flights will be great as well considering that CLT does not have any direct service to JFK.
