Spirit Announces FLL-NAS

Fri Oct 08, 2004 3:14 am

Spirit has announced non-stop Ft. Lauderdale-Nassau service, beginning 10 January 2005. Intro fares start at an unheard of $39 each way! This is a major, high-yielding market for the airlines that fly it, with average fares in the low to mid-$200s for the 40 minute flight. Spirit Airlines' joins American Eagle, Continental Connection, Bahamasair, US Airways Express, and Chalk's Ocean Airways on the route, served by over 45 flights a day from South Florida's three airports. It is one of the most traveled international routes from the US.

Holy Taxes, I can see why this is normally a $200 r/t:

Airfare: $88.00
Passenger Facility Charge: $3.00
Security Tax: $2.50
Federal Inspection Fee: $3.10
User Fee: $7.00
International Departure Tax: $27.40
International Fees: $15.00
Total: $146.00

--
$58 in taxes on a $88 fare, I think this will tell you why the LCC's are not to anxious to fly International.

Dont forget that Laker Airways was also flying this route on 5x a week; although they have suspended service due to the Freeport area being damaged by the Hurricanes.

* On a side note I am happy with Spirit coming although i would have prefered
a nonstop from Chicago.

Trust me that $146 is CHEAP!  Wow! My ticket to fly to FLL on Nov 16th caused me $210  Crying on Bahamasair (one of the cheapest on the route). I think its now about $256 Nuts. Many people will gladly pay that. I wonder if jetblue will try and start service also from FLL.
Looks like the fresh wind has gone stale

I've been reading these board for almost 4 years now and finally joined today!
This is more good news for FLL as Spirit is expanding internationaly. Unfortunately if the NIMBYs near the airport continue to get their way this growth will halt real soon.

Spirit is likely to continue pre-empting US Airways desire to open up a Fort Lauderdale focus city. The again, who knows if US will be around come February.

While FLL-NAS is a well travelled route, its already served with many flights per day mainly with regional aircraft.

It will be interesting to see if the route can support the new Spirit flights plus the announced US Airways flights......seems like an over capacity situation to me. Also, wasnt there speculation that JetBlue was also thinking about a couple flights a day between FLL and NAS?

As a FLL resident, I think I should voice my opinion:
First: Way to go Spirit!
Second: I think that they see jetBlue as a potential competetor on the route and want to start ASAP

That being said, jetBlue and Spirit can fly all they want, but the key to this route for a US LCC is two things:
1) a competive fare (duh)
2) The right flight times.
Many people take day trips to NAS (for one reason on another  Big grin) so they'd have to have a morning flight and evening flight. In addition, a noontime roundtrip would probably be nice as well to compliment the service, but the first two are musts.
I think that Spirit will be very sucessful as they have a good reputation, a name in the Miami area, and they are a domestic carrier which doesn't fly props! Definently a great choice, I might use them sometime!
NEXT FLIGHT: FLL-ATL-HPN on FL

It doesn't matter because they aren't going for local passengers here, they are going for connecting passengers. They will probably be restrictive on how many of the lowest fare they sell to local traffic on FLL-NAS after the introductory fares are gone, becuase, even though they are a low-cost carrier, they still know it is a market they can charge a lot in.

Spirit should have some feed into the NAS flight with nonstops to FLL from DTW, ORD, ACY, PVD, DCA and LGA. I haven't checked the arrival times but i'm sure they have arranged the NAS flight to connect with those other flights. Even if the connections don't sync with the NAS flight the O&D market from MIA/FLL/PBI to NAS is much larger than most people probably think. The Bahamas are South Florida's favorite one day getaway playground.
