New Terminal At TPA

Fri Oct 08, 2004 11:33 am

Regarding an article in today's Tampa Tribune:

http://news.tbo.com/news/MGBBFI8O10E.html

The article says that the new Airside C hopes to attract new airlines to Tampa. Who doesn't yet serve Tampa?

Looks like the new airside will be really nice, similar to Airside E (Delta) which is newer and very nice.

I only wish STL had as many carriers as TPA. TPA should be happy we have the number of carriers we already have.

Love TPA! Would like to see some airline have the testicles to make this the next hub to Latin America. I hate connecting in MIA and would like this to be the alternative to MIA. But one can only dream. Sorry MIA.

Unfortunately, TPA will not have the gate resources to create such a hub when Airside C opens. Interestingly, The Tampa Tribune has called Southwest's operation at TPA a "hub" in past articles.

Problem is there is very litte local traffic to Latin America. That's what makes Miami Miami, and Tampa just another Charlotte in terms of Latin American traffic.

I love TPA but I don't want to see it a hub in any way and I don't think the layout would support a hub.

I've never been to Tampa, so I've always wondered exactly what the attraction is ... I have always been surprised that BA serves TPA.

Can anyone give insight? Please, I'm not criticizing Tampa at all, just curious.

You poor sould, well we are one of those major markets that seems to be in it teen years. The Tampa Metro is growing quickly and doesn't have to rely on the mouse for support. Along with our lower operating costs and lovely beaches I might add, we are the city that is growing up to be big. BA has served TPA for almost 8 years (I think, didn't they start service in 1997?), we must have never lost money on the route as they continue to upgrade and serve it. More recently our international traffic has fallen off, with the withdrawl of Thomas Cook/Condor. The authority is trying to bring back international travel to a market that is not yet proven, which creates a few problems. Let alone the stupid MCO down the 4, as you can tell I am not a proMCOer on this board. Any how the HCAA can get pretty much any domestic service it thinks we would need and so international is the weak spot they are trying to focus on more, but also retaining domestic service at the same time. For more information about TPA go to: http://www.tampaairport.com

I hope I can see in our fair city one day!
Looking forward to the new AA

I haven't been to Tampa in years, and actually I've only passed by on the way to Bradenton/Clearwater. I was at the Buccaneers stadium about 10 years ago, not sure where that is exactly. Some people in the past, told me it was boring/ugly and others more recently say it's good and there are more things to do (Ybor City). Even St Pete that was known exclusively as a retirement community now I hear it's not so anymore. A friend who now lives in Tampa says there is a really bad side of town wheres in Orlando the bad areas are not that bad. I've also been told people in Tampa are more friendly than either Orlando or Miami.

Is good to hear the city is growing, I don't know it will ever draw as many tourists as Miami or O-town. Are there any big companies, business or factories planning to establish themselves in the Tampa Bay area?

Graham,

I believe BA may have started nonstop service in 1997. Prior to that time, service to TPA was via BDA with a mix of aircraft including D10's and L10's.

Miamix,

Verizon (after taking over GTE) is a major player in Tampa as well as Citibank. Also, Raymond James Financial Group (for which the new stadium is named after) has several offices in Tampa as well as across the Howard Franklin Bridge in St. Pete.

BA actually stopped serving TPA for a while, right? Then they brought back service with nonstops to LGW.

We used to have:

Air Jamaica
Air Aruba
LTU
Condor
Martinair
Mexicana

Interestingly, MCO does to TPA, what TPA does to SRQ.

I think the architect that designed TPA designed MCO as well...

How long is 18L/36R going to be closed? They just had it closed for 2 months in early 2003. Will 18R/36L need repairs soon?

Tampa is progressing very nicely as a town. The Bucs stadium has been replaced 6 years ago making it among the newest and nicest NFL stadiums, along with the downtown area which has been cleaned up. St. Pete still is lacking along with clearwater.

I've never had problems getting out of TPA on airplanes and MCO is just a short ride away. I think both airports are quite nice and I feel privledged to live within two hours of one of the top tourist destinations of the country (Orlando) and near one of the easiest airports to navigate (TPA).
