All I have to say is good luck with that. EWR is a very hard plae to spot at with out being hastled by the cops. If you want to just sit in your car and watch the planes that sit in the IKEA parking lot which is across the NJ Turnpike from the airport. Every time I go and take out my camera I'm either hastled by the Elizabeth PD and for the first time, this summer I had a nice run in with the Department of Homeland Security. But good luck if you go out. I know it sucks that you can't really take pics but as a true aviation enthousiest you will still enjoy just watching those magnificent pieces of machinery gliding through the air.

P.S. Sorry about the spelling but the spell check is down and it's 3:40AM.

Ditto to what COEWRNJ said. There are some good spots around EWR, but you will get hassled and threatened. My brother-in-law has had his car searched and he and I have both had several encounters with PAPD as well as Elizabeth PD. PAPD even uses an S-76 helicopter to patrol the airport perimeter.

NorthwestEWR,

I called EWR my home airport for three years and pretty much ran into the same problems that COEWRNJ and Tjwgrr mentioned. So, I have lost hopes of spotting anywhere near EWR. The only thing I can suggest is that you could go to the IKEA cafe, food's not all that great, but if they are using runway 4L and 4R then you have some spectacular approaches for 4R going not far from you. I usually set aside time to sit in the cafe whenever I go to IKEA.

On another note, we've been spotting at PHL a few times, and there's a nice group down there that I know. We've had a run in with the cops once and it has now been sorted out. They just leave us alone. If you want to be on the next one, whenever that is, let me know.

Check out the clips in my profile. They were all taken at PHL.

cheers

I agree with WindowSeat. The IKEA cafe is by far the best place (best next thing to being a pax at the C terminal!)

I was at that Ikea several weeks ago and was told by security that I couldn't film there. However, I was there for about 30 minutes, getting video of several CO jets, and was told not to shoot video as the Singapore A345 was arriving!

Wow... what did I do after that? I left, headed for JFK and was shooting video at my 13L spot (it was at night so it was somewhat hard for any security to see me!).

Are the little platforms at the ends of Terminals A and B (the ones where everyone smokes) still open, and have people been able to spot there?

I haven't been there for several years, and I recall views were limited, though.

I know it's the expensive way, but I go to the economy parking lot at the end of 22L/22R. It's 10 bucks for the first few hours or so. While there, there are so many cars that you can just blend in. I even sat on the back of my car with my camera this summer and nobody hasseled me. Especially at dusk, it's easy to sit and spot. Taking pictures are a little harder, just try not to take any pics while the little security van is driving by...other than that...that's my #1 place at EWR. It's the best when the planes are landing approach 22L/22R and watch them take off away from you.

Dalfannyc,

Thats a good idea, never thought of that. next time you go, let me know, I'll join ya. You have no idea, how long I have waited to spot at EWRBig grin

btw, does your name stand for Delta Airlines fan? I had a nightmarish experience on DL getting to San Francisco yesterday, but nonetheless, I'm a DL fan too...

NorthwestEWR,

Glad you like the videos...Welcome to A.net!

cheers

There is also a nearby mall, which is called jersey gardens where you can make some great photos of departing traffic.

Hello all,

there is also one good spot for RWYs 4L&R approaches. Coming from Woodbridge, Linden area on Route 1 North.

In Newark there is a last light intersection on Rt.1 (Where Rt.1 divides for local and trucks) You should make a right on that intersection and follow the route down until you see McDonald's. Park in their parking lot.

You will have a nice view on approaching airplanes and you might get something to drink and eat.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I have done that couple of times I stoped by the Vrigin Cargo offices. They have parking lot close to RWY11/29 and Dep. traffic on RWY22R. You might try to go there.

And I will second IKEA. There is a good place to go and sit. Taking pictures might be little harder.

Cheers,
Andrej

Windowseat -
Yes I am a big DL fan. It pains me that they are suffering as I'm entering the job market this winter and I am going to try to get into the aviation industry and a job with a promising airline (DL being my favorite) would have been nice....back to the thread topic...
I've taken many pics from the parking lot at EWR, none good enough to post on ANET as I'm not a professional photographer, however the planes are very low over the lot and when they are landing on the 22s, its awesome.

Well it is hard at EWR. I used to work on the ramp for internationals. I used to take pictures(this was 2003). The PAPD wouldn't really bother me. My own co-workers were the people bugging me. Maybe it's different on the inside but I had no problems.

so apparently there are a few good spots for EWR. I want to go up there to get some pics of that Peter Max CO 777. I wanted rent a car, but at the same time.. I've never driven up there lol.. How is traffic, if one needs to move from one approach to the other if they change runways?

I'll be staying in Elizabeth avenue, about a block away directly underneath the flight path for the 04s. I could even take a few pics from this one intersection there but.. if they're landing on the 22s I'll definitely need to drive.

To echo what everyone else has said, EWR is the most difficult place to spot in the NY area now.

Virgin Cargo have their own security who will call the cops to throw you out. You can stand on the smoking decks at the end of the terminals-how long you'd last without getting kicked out I have no clue!

IKEA is not a good idea, especially with a camera-they will confiscate your film (even if you haven't used it that day!)

I was told to go find a quiet side street in Elizabeth to watch the aircraft from. The cop wasn't impressed when I told him that's exactly where a terrorist would go (and not stand out in a crowd!!)

I'm thinking of going to Houston or Cleveland to catch up on my CO fleet!

Hello all,

I was thinking so the cops would leave me alone. I am volunteer EMT and I have a nice winter jacket with EMT symbol and Woodbridge Township badge on the other. IF I was going to spot with this "outfit" do you think that they might leave me?

I am trying to use all possible sources to be left alone.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
Cheers,

Andrej
