I don't understand why he was arrested. Why didn't the TSA just confiscate the blade?

You don't understand? Are you joking? What did you miss about all the signs on the way to security that tell you certain things, like what he had , are considered a felony?

Easy -- "Let's make an example -- this guys famous, if we arrest him, it'll show everyone how serious we are".

Unfortunately, the heightened security + this guys celebrity = over-reaction.

Yes, I agree, it is highly noted and communicated HOWEVER do you even realize how easy it is to accidentally pack something?

When we were going to CUN earlier this year, we got to the airport, and one of the bags we were checking (with a nail file in it) in was overweight. So, in a rush, we just grabbed stuff from that bag, and moved it into our carry-on.

It wasn't until we were PAST security that my friend noticed her nail file was in our carry on (was missed by security) so we quickly discarded it in a garbage.. Perfect example.

He's a marginal "celebrity" at best. I doubt anyone at the airport recognized him before he identified himself.

Props to the TSA guy who found it...he'll be getting a couple days off as reward.

It is VERY easy to forget something that you have in your bag. Not long ago the TSA stopped me because I had a rather large pocket knife in my bag. I put it in there on a Friday afternoon, forgot it was there, and brought it in to work with me on Monday morning. I go through security EVERY DAY and totally forgot about it. Apparently the only thing that kept me from getting into any trouble was the fact that it was just shy of 4" long. They just kept it and I went on my way.

TSA has lowered their tolerance for "forgetting". There are fresh signs up at most checkpoints reminding you to check for restricted items and reiterating that they will prosecute violators. They have really started to crack down.

"Oh yes Mr. TSA agent I forgot that I had that thermo nuclear device hidden between the cover of my brief case."

Maybe one day we will start accepting responsibility for our own actions!

As far as him being a “marginal" celebrity, more like a celebrity in his own mind and no one else's. When I originally read the title of the thread, I thought it might have been the son of Michael Boyd (The Boyd Group) that always rails the TSA.

Realistically.... what the hell can you do with a switch blade? It's going to take alot more than that to hijack a plane these days.

Well probably not much.

But you are missing the bigger picture. It's all about perception and why the TSA was created in the first place. It's a power grab.

After all, if you have a bunch of guys standing around beating their chest and doing random cavity searches, and body slamming someone who they don't like, well, then we must be "safer".

Perhaps that switchblades are illegal at all may have something to do with it.

I'm not sure but I know the ones I brought back from Sicily were confiscated for that reason - 32 years ago.

In New York both possesion and carrying a switchblade knive is illegal. This is a serious offense with up to a $10,000 fine and 9 months in jail, so it isn't just a TSA thing. The fact that it was found by the TSA is irrelevant because if a normal policeman found you with a switchblade, you would get in serious trouble in New York, so I wouldn't go on blaming the TSA alone. The TSA just enforced the law, and I see nothing wrong with that. If the had just let him go, then that would show that not only the TSA is weak, but that laws are not pertinent to everyone. He made an error in judgement for having one with him in general. Although I do agree that if it was found in checked luggage or elsewhere, it probably wouldn't have been as big of a deal, he deserved to .

Am I the only one that thought Brandon was related to Don Boyd and this was related to aviation photography? lol

Either way, I'm glad they found it and I'm glad they followed protocol and arrested him.

They are a rock band. And if you are so ignorant as to not know who they are, then I suggest you do not say anything about them.

To me the bigger question that isn't being asked is why does anyone have need of a switchblade for their personal use? A pocket knife is something that many people carry around, but I don't know anyone who would have need of a switchblade. That in and of itself seems like the bigger issue regarding this story.

Last summer on my way to LHR from ORD, I had a green Swiss Army knife on me and they told me to mail it back to myself or let it be "junked" into their bind. Like I cared...guess they did with Incubus lead singer.
