JL Major Cancellations!

Sun Oct 10, 2004 6:11 am

Yesterday, the typhoon went through Japan and struck Tokyo

HND and NRT received major delays but this is the strange story.

JL on the schedule has not alternated the flight to LAX, SFO, LAS, and YVR. They are all indicated as cancelled. Besides this, I know many others are cancelled but what went wrong? Even if its aircraft alternation, they can't just cancel the flight. There are many business men, etc. Who bought tickets. Any idea what's going to happen?

Cancelled due to weather. Happens all the time. People can complain all they want, but the airlines can't do anything about it. Safety comes first. Airlines are not responsible for, nor able to control the weather. Were those cancelled flights scheduled to leave when the typhoon hit Tokyo? All JAL NRT flights to Hawaii were also cancelled today and they are normally scheduled to depart when the typhoon was still in the area.

The thing is, many other carriers are still operating flights (not normally scheduled) for the pax who had the tickets.

Then what do they do?

Just leave the pax with a worthless ticket and run away with their money?

Ktachiya:

Very simple. Other airlines already have their planes in NRT. They need to return the planes to their country of origin, late or not. For JL and NH, if they reschedule all the flights that were canceled during the typhoon, then they likely will have to reschedule many flights for the weeks to come. It is a lot easier to rebook the affected passengers on later flights or on other airlines' flights.

I thought it was interesting because on Saturday night in NRT they extended the Night curfew till very late. There were even some departures after mid-night by CO,FJ,QF!

It is very very strange now

The NRT schedule indicates for instance, 5 flights today from NRT to YVR. AC 004 as always, 2004 (Emergency flight), 5020 (I have no idea what this is) Jal has 12 to MEX and 8018 (Emergency flight) I have no idea but there are going to be a lot of pax tommorow arriving from NRT. JFK also sees more than usual I think.

A friend of mine was on JL 001 this past Saturday and she said they tried to land at NRT twice but due to heavy winds/rain was diverted to KIX. She said it was the only time she was really scared on an aircraft.

Why is it that JAL cancelled their flights, however, ANA did not. ANA was able to land their flights into Narita for the most part and they even got the flight out to LAX, SFO, SIN, BKK, PVG, PEK etc.. all between the hours of 5 ~ 8pm on Saturday.

I know several people who was on NH007 flight on Saturday who were all very thankful that they chose ANA and not JAL or UA since they both cancelled their flights.

I find it odd that ANA got through this tyhoon without the damage other airlines experinced due to cancellations, were the other airlines too quick to cancel or were they just being more cautious than ANA?

That is certainly interesting. But it must be for safety's sake and at the discretion of a high ranking JAL flight ops manager as it involves many flights.

Sometimes one airline chooses not to try while others do.
