What Is Up With This Aircraft?

Sun Oct 10, 2004 10:49 pm

Hey everyone! Well, while browsing through the database, I found this picture showing a lot of the aircraft stored at VCV, and enlarged it, looked closely, and to my surprise found what looked like a cross between a 767, and a 747, or something like that. No, before you say, it is not a 747.  Smile I think its a 767-200, that has been mutated, and a hump, like on the 747 was put on it, but it extends to the middle of the aircraft! Does anybody have any idea what the aircraft was used for, and its past, or even know anything about it?

Oh, and the aircraft I'm talking about is in the upper left hand side of the first picture, and far right in the second picture. Thanks in advance!

The aircraft you're referring to was a test bed for the U.S. Army. It was developed with an airborne laser and was used to demonstrate the technology for the airborne laser.

It is a modified 767 developed under the Airborne Surveillance Testbed programme, part of the US Government's anti-ballistic missile defence efforts.

The dorsal housing above the forward fuselage carries an infra-red sensor to provide detection, early warning and tracking of inbound ballistic missiles.
