Very Last Swiss MD11 Flight 31OCT

Wed Oct 13, 2004 4:12 am

Hello!

As most of you know, the 31st of October will be the very last day with the last remaining Swiss MD11 ( HB-IWE ) flying.

The flight will arrive from ORD in the early morning and will do two 1,5hrs sightseeing flights in the afternoon.

Just out of curiosity, who of you guys will be on one of these 2 sightseeing flights?

So far I know following A.nutters:

Name / Class / Seat / Flight:

Florian Trojer ( myself ) ( Y / 18A / #2 )
Wolfgang Hut ( Y / 18B / #2 )
Christian Galliker ( C / 10J / #2 )
Valter Alves ( Y / 35J / #2 )

I'm sure there are more ( especially Swiss ) A.nutters who will be there.

Cheers,
Florian

I'll be on the first of the two sightseeing flights (LX9438), together with four colleagues who are not members on a.net.

Alex Ndebele (Y / 26G / #1)

So we won't be on the same flight, but i guess we'll meet at the lunch break between the two flights. Looking foward to meeting you guys there, and of course looking forward to finally having my first MD-11 flight!

Grüße, Alex.

Hi Alex, I just read in the confirmation I got that the lunch break will start at 1230. Any idea where this will be?

Will there anyone be at the airport in the early morning for shooting the arrival from ORD? It all depends on the weather but Wolfgang Hut and myself will do some spotting during the morning, for sure.

Anybody wants to meet up?

What's with these sightseeing flights? Where do they originate, and where do they go? Who can get on them? They sound pretty worthwhile, if you can get on em!

Thanks  Smile

Hi DeltaGuy!

I am sorry to tell you that these flights are booked out. Swiss originally wanted to do 1 farewell sightseeing flight for enthusiasts, now they already make 2 because of so much interest.

The flights will takeoff and land at ZRH, and they will do a 1,5hrs sightseeing flight above the alps.

You may consider to get on the ORD-ZRH flight if you want to fly her  Wink/being sarcastic

Aerosol

I may have an email that you could use but obviously with the utmost discretion.

Email me and I will send you the details.

As for the last flight I know that Swiss did not plan 2 flights but due to the fact that there were so many demands they included the 2nd flight.

I know for sure that the crew will also be great as they had to apply for the last flight so it will be a memorable moment for everyone!

I got my confirmation eMail last Friday. Fellow a.netter Contact Air has booked the flight as well but didn't receive a confirmation yet. But keep in mind that this whole flight is obviously organized by one single person, at least the eMail contact is a personal eMail address and not something like reservations@swiss.com or whatever. So it's only natural that we can't all get the confirmation at the same time, keep in mind that there were apparently more bookings than seats available. The person in charge has to decide who gets his/her first seat preferrence (e.g. Business Window) and who gets another category instead of his/her preferred seat (e.g. Business Middle or Economy Window). It might take a few days to decide who gets which seat, also there are assigned seats, they have to take care of groups sitting next to each other, ... quite a task to organize all this, at least when you try to fulfill as many requests as possible.

I know it's easy to talk when you already have your confirmation, but I can imagine that there a lot of things to organize for the whole flight. I'm 100% certain that you'll all get a reply within the next few days.

Well... It is sad to see this wonderful plane in it's final days with Swiss. I just bought a DVD video from justplanes.com called Swiss MD-11 where you can see a complete two + hours of preparations, in flight, landings, take offs with Swiss crew.

Is KLM MD-11-less already?
If not, lets hope they do some enthusiast flights as well before they go......and that publicity is a bit better than with Swiss.

I also got my confirmation email last week - but I booked sometime in September... took quite a while.
Bookings were accepted until 1st October. On a flight like this full of enthusiasts, where seat allocation and Window or Middle is much more important than on an "ordinary" flight, it wouldn't make too much sense to start confirming seats as long as they still accept bookings. They started planning seat / group allocations on Monday, 4th October, I suppose. I for one never expected to receive any reply before end of last week - which was exactly when I got my confirmation.

I'm also very pleased that we got four seats next to each other, although we booked separately and just added the request for seats next to each other.

For those who cannot join the flights and wish to take pictures:

08.10am, STA of LX009 ex ORD, Pier E (very last commercial LX MD11 flight)
11.00am, STD of LX9438, Pier E, sightseeing flight
12.30am, STA of LX9438, Pier B (stand B35, deboarding via steps)
02.30pm, STD of LX9449, Pier B (stand B35, boarding via steps)
03.45pm, STD of LX9449, Pier A or E

Landings on runway 14, take-offs on runway 28, subject to change. Pictures can be taken from the terrace Pier B, parking lot near runway 28 and/or parking lot in the approach area near runways 14 and 16.

In between the two sightseeing flights, all booked passengers of these two flights are invited to a drink in the former passenger waiting lounge while HB-IWE will be parked right in front of it.

I wish both passengers and photogs a clear and sunny day!

Greetings,

I'm a long time reader of the a.net forums, and decided to try my luck at posting.

Is anyone planning on taking any pix of the MD-11 from the ORD side of things at all?

In checking Swiss's website, it appears that the flight departs ORD @ 17:40 on 30-Oct.

If it is not too dark / weather permitting, I'll take a bunch of pix of the MD-11 departing ORD and post them.

Regards,

Landings on runway 14, take-offs on runway 28, subject to change. Pictures can be taken from the terrace Pier B, parking lot near runway 28 and/or parking lot in the approach area near runways 14 and 16.

-----------------------

Unique: So the MD-11 will take off at rnwy 28? How did you find that out, since this is an unusual rnwy for widebodies, and is there a way in finding this out in general on what runway the planes take off?
if it is going to take off on 28 Id recommend The terrace of Dock E to take pictures.

So the MD-11 will take off at Rwy 28? How did you find that out, since this is an unusual runway for widebodies, and is there a way in finding this out in general on what runway the planes take off? If it is going to take off on 28 I'd recommend the terrace of Dock E to take pictures.

DeltaWings, Rwy28 is the main take-off runway at ZRH. It's not restricted to narrowbody aircraft. It depends on the take-off weight if an aircraft takes Rwy28 or Rwy16 hence you cannot tell way in advance which runway it takes. For ZRH, it's experience and I can tell you that a sightseeing flight of a good hour with no cargo and baggage on board will take Rwy28.

Terrace on top of Pier E is a good option, but beware of the sun in front of you (if it's sunny) as Rwy28 is south of Pier E.

October is a sad month indeed!

Air Canada are retiring their B744's and Swiss is retiring their MD11's. Is there any other airline out their retiring an aircraft type this month?

@Deltawings: my assigned seat is 26G, but we're a group of four sitting on 26DEFG so I might be any of those four. Well, maybe not the girl, which means I might be any of the three guys of this group. We could also meet before the flight, I just don't know yet if I come to ZRH by car or flight. Edit: ...Which means I don't know what time I'll arrive there.

JAL also got rid of their MD-11's. But on the other hand, they received the 744 Freighter.

But its ironic that Swiss is retiring their planes right when the winter season starts. Or is that because they can decrease their fleet at this time?

Greetings,

The last Swiss MD-11, LX 008, arrived at ORD on 27L without any problems.

The only problem I had was the flight was supposed to land on 27R (which is where I was all setup, but ATC moved it over to the left side at the last minute which didn't help picture taking).

I'm working on getting some pictures uploaded to the database. Because the weather isn't good here, it will be dark before LX009 leaves for ZRH. Thus, I won't have any pictures of the final MD-11 departure.

Those of you taking the rides in ZRH, have fun and upload lots of pictures.

Thanks,

Scott

Hmm... I saw HB-IWE this morning: she arrived at ZRH while I was waiting for my departure to BOS, and just after our takeoff, including a 270 degree turn just after takeoff, I saw her taxiing towards the active runway - I guess she was leaving on her last outbound flight at that point...

I'm glad I took a bunch of pictures through the terminal window.

And, to top things off, I just had a look at my flight-database: I flew on HB-IWE on 4 May 2000, obviously still flying as Swissair at that time, from ZRH to JNB.

By the way: the MD11 that's parked on the other side of runway 16/34 from the terminal - which registration is/was that one?

Frank

Sad to see the JAL MD-11s go, now the Swiss MD-11s. I'm glad I had the opportunity to fly a Swissair MD-11 from SIN-ZRH-SIN! Enjoyed every bit of it, especially since the MD-11 is my favorite aircraft.
