Australia/NZ - Sth America Capacity

Wed Oct 13, 2004 2:53 pm

Anyone you speak to in the industry tends to say the same thing...
The Australia/NZ to Sth America sector is underserved.

LAN operate 3 x A343 pw [going to 4pw in Dec] with a QF codeshare.
santiago - auckland - sydney

Aerolineas operate 2 x A342 pw, Buenos Aires - Auckland - Sydney..

Given that year round airfares are A$2200 low season, and A$3000 peak, I am surprissed that Air NZ has not considered operating this service.

AKL-RIO or AKL-SAO PAULO with a Varig codeshare would work well.
BNE/SYD/MEL feeding into AKL, and then from RIO/SAO P, varig could feed Uraguay, Argentina, Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela, etc.

thoughts?? any inside goss?

I just got a great deal on AR between SYD and EZE for a mere $1800. I beleive that this is their low fare during the Winter months. The fact that QF code shares on the LA flights, prices tend to be a bit more expensive. As I have stated before on another thread, there where many Chileans onboard AR as it was cheaper for them to fly via EZE rather than going on LA.

As fir NZ:A couple of months ago a group of new recruits told me that NZ where looking at offering flights to EZE. I hate rumours, but that is what they where told during trainning.
I guess we will just have to wait and see.
If this flight does go ahead, it could cause huge head aches for AR and LA as they would loose the lucrative Brazilian market that fills these flights up. EK is another that is looking at flying to EZE and GRU. Wether it does so via AKL is yet to be seen.

I agree, though it is good to see 2 South American carriers in AKL and SYD! I'm sure at one stage Varig were considering a flight to AKL and SYD, anyone heard of that? It would also be great if NZ flew to South America.

AR will add a third flight in November through to March, though their loads are terrible sometimes, LA on the other hand seem to have higher loads more often.

Yes, LA is boosted along with many QF Frequent Fliers I suspect.

I would love NZ to enter the market, but commence the service in MEL. They could feed it from SYD and BNE as well. Throw on the RG code, and I think it would do quite well.

Perhaps NZ will consider it once it's fleet is upgraded and it starts to receive its B777's.

I'm guessing AKL to Rio would have to be a B744 rather than B777?
