Although the press usually gets details like this wrong, the statement says that it is going to be a "direct" flight, so it could be a EWR-HAM-TXL-(HAM-)EWR rotation.

The TXL-run will be a nonstop flight on both ways.

Moreover, what's the source for the HAM flight of Continental?

No,HAM will be CO 74/75 launching in June, while TXL will fly as CO 96/97 and will launch in July. CO never has been into tags, other than a few in S Am.

I think the last flights from Hamburg to the States were operated by Delta Airlines (HAM - ATL (?) ) in the end 90ies  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

But congratulations and good luck to Hamburg!

The flight times are superb.
Early arrival at Newark - very nice for connections on continental.

HAM, TXL, but still no MUC.............

I was wondering about that too as MUC is definitely higher yielding than TXL and most probably also superior to HAM in this aspect.

I can imagine that CO fears not being able to attract enough business pax who have been choosing LH´s Privatair flight from MUC to EWR so that they rather step into new markets like Berlin and Hamburg where there is less competition.

Anyway, great news for HAM, I hope the flight turns out to do well.  Smile

Considering the amount of work that I have been and will be doing for a company in Lübeck (although mostly in their Boston, USA office), I'm quite happy to see this as it will give me a quick route to get there. I would have to go into FRA or AMS currently. Who knows, I may be one of the first riders when these flights start. Outstanding work by CO.  Big thumbs up

It looks like CO are really going for it. I mean launching 6 'long-haul' destinations in a short space of time is pretty impressive.

Hamburg makes 6.

With CO opening 2 new flights to Germany they might be trying to give the German market another go. Ideally these flights to secondary trans-atlantic markets will mirror the success that Continental has had to secondary British markets.

No.

Lufthansa and Delta Airlines offeres HAM-US service during the 1990s. Lufthansa offered JFK-HAM and MIA-HAM until around '95/'96; and Delta flew JFK-HAM until about '98 and ATL-HAM until around '99.

HOORAY!

CO hasn't given up on Germany afterall! But why will HAM and TXL work if DUS and MUC didn't?? What is the difference?

MUC already has a lot of traffic to America. LH has a daily JFK and a daily all-business flight to EWR. DUS also has an all-business LH flight to EWR. And LTU has announced an DUS-JFK for next summer too. So both markets are already covered. HAM and BER are completely new transatlantic nonstop markets.

Running smaller aircraft, the 752, most likely. When CO flew DUS and MUC before it was with the DC-10-30, I believe, and that was probably too much capacity for the route. With the 752, you have a plane much more suited for the route.

Oh, by the way, don't be surprised if MUC and DUS are started back up, using a 752 or a 762....

Before completely dropping DUS, I believe CO used a 757. MUC was dropped long before CO was using 757 across the Atlantic.

I find it ironic that CO, an airline that doesn't have any Airbus a/c operating to/from an airport (Hamburg) that (if I am correct) is the final delivery airport for narrowbody Airbus models.

Ltbwr,
you are not correct. CO is going to serve Hamburg Fuhlsbüttel. The Airbus facilities are located at Hamburg Finkenwerder. It´s like the same with Seattle and Boeing.

Good news for Hamburg. Future will show how long CO can serve all these new international routes...

There should be some business traffic in relation to the maritime shipping industry which is strong in Hamburg and Newark, Port Newark Elizabeth is the largest Port on the US East Coast and is adjacent to Newark Airport.

From what I've read Germany is one of if not the main port of origin for most imports handled at Port Newark.

Great for Continental Airlines to announce new nonstop service to HAM.
What about EWR-STR? Delta operated JFK-STR a while back ago, using 763 equipment. They could code share with Delta. (IE- The Skyteam)

Pensacolaguy, DL has been and is still flying to STR daily from ATL, using 767's. I guess that DL prefers ATL instead of JFK because of the connections available to its passengers at ATL.

And welcome to A.net Pensacolaguy and HPnonrev99!!!
