Is DL Filing For ATL-GLA?

Thu Oct 14, 2004 1:05 am

"There's no official word, but this is part of the work-rule changes NW is negotiating with the pilots. I was working a red-eye with a DTW based 757 captain whos said that 757's were going to be utilised on transatlantic routes. That GLA, SNN and possibly MAN will be served with the 757. GLA and SNN for certain, while MAN, and BHX are being loosely considered. Announcements are supposed to be coming soon. DL is also filing an application for rights to fly into GLA from ATL. NW is looking at BOS and DTW."

This was written by a NWA F/A, but is it true? ATL would provide excellent connecting possibilities and I truely hope this service comes true in the next year or two.

I'd imagine that a B757 flown on ATL-GLA is going to need a refueling stop each way. This would make for a very long trip and may make it less atrractive to customers. I'm sure there is a ready market for the route but I'm not convinced the B757 would be the right aircraft for the job.

The 757 was for NWA. I'd imagine DL would use a 767, if the route even starts.

Ahh, my mistake. Would be interesting to see if NW take this decision after seeing the huge success CO, and more recently AA, have had on opening up 757 transatlantic routes.

I'm sure BOS-GLA would be a hit, I know the route has been served in the past by NW with DC-10's so something the size of a 752 should work very well. DTW-GLA would be interesting, I'm pretty sure a 752 would be able to do it non-stop given that CO does CLE-LGW.

DL would never fly ATL-GLA simply because of the fact that the O&D isn't there. They could depend strictly on connections due to them having 1,051 flights a day at ATL effective 1/31/05. And they would fly a 763, not a 757.

I would disagree...I think the potential DOES exist for an ATL-GLA flight just for the reasons of connecting traffic. There is a vast amount of destinations available for US customers to connect via ATL (one stop) to GLA. It would prevent the dreaded LGW connections and I would much rather connect through ATL than LGW. I think they should persue this route along with NW from BOS/DTW. GLA is my Scottish destination of choice and would love to see more traffic into it from the USA. A 763ER would be the logical and I think profitable choice for DL from ATL, cargo alone could do well on this route. Also DL has no current codeshare flights to GLA so what better than to add their own, DL does already have a codeshare flight to EDI on BritAir IIRC.

That's pretty much right, although it's Cityjet who operate the flights I think, so obviously to and from CDG is where the codeshare exists. Doesn't mean they can't add their own though.  Big grin

1,051 flights a day at ATL

 Wow!

ScottishLaddie,

DL mainline would technically only have 690 daily flights, but with DL Connection they would have 1,051 daily flights. Now THAT'S a super hub.

The only thing DL will be filing for the next few months will for Chapter 11 bankruptcy unless it finds some magical turnaround plan.
