Will Air Canada Retire Its Remaining 3 B 747-400s?

Thu Oct 14, 2004 4:04 am

Any news? They mentioned about retiring their remaining 3 B 747-400s many times but still.....

Hope they will stay for a while.

Those 3 B 747-400s are combis.

Well they keep on delaying their retirement. So I am not sure when they will be gone completely.

Yes, these very fitting symbols of AC's failed obsession with rampant excess capacity will soon be removed from service.

If only failed excess mgmt capacity would be removed also......

Actually the AC 747's didn't have many more seats than the 330's and 340's so passenger capacity is not the issue but operating only 3 of them is highly inefficient. Surprisingly with AC's "new" direction in targeting intercontinental markets I would think that they would keep 747's for Asian flights as the market potential is there.

Personally I will miss the 747's, they were my favorites on the intercontinental routes.

cheers

I agree Alek. Indeed, in the absense of a buyer or new lessor, you would think it would make sense to keep them. I guess it all depends on the lease agreement.

Which one is the one on that hangar of YVR along with the three Zip 732? I heard that CA was interested in it, but its one of the combis that came out at the very beginning of the combi line isn't it? I bet there are major restrictions on the first few combis that came out.

I have no idea why its in YVR, not YYZ as YYZ is the hub for those three combis.

These 3 are oddballs; there is extra floor strengthening or something of that nature as required by DoD when AC bought them, making them quite a bit heavier than a standard 74E. As such, they are seen as quite undesirable on the market.
buhh bye

C-GAGM has been retired. It was the only one owned by AC. 'GL and 'GN are leased from GECAS.

Isn't AI interested in them? I though they were in the market for 747 Combis, but maybe thinking of another airline.

C-FBCA, -FCRA have already gone to AR; -GMWW is about to follow. Does anyone know if any of AC's remaining 744s will follow suit?
