SYD/MEL/Auckaland, been there done that before. It didnt work before chances are not that much better on it working now. I remember even UA pulled out of Aukland not too long ago.

First, a daily service to either SYD or MEL is a three-aircraft rotation, and we don't have enough of the only equipment with sufficient range (777) in our fleet to dedicate to the route. In addition, the market is quite heavily diluted with competition from a number of well-established carriers on the route which would undoubtedly compete heavily on the route to defend "home turf".

We have the rights for LAX/GUM/HNL-SYD/BNE/MEL, but don't look for any of them to start any time soon, since they are incompatible with our current strategy of using right-sized aircraft to underserved markets; places we can make money where our competitors cannot.

777gk,

What routes do you fly for CO?

Thanks,

I think the Australia-US route is going to get more saturated when Virgin Blue gets the authority it wants to fly transpacific. Is SIA or Cathay still vying for that authority?

I fly primarily 767 routes for Continental these days, although I am fully qualified on the Boeing 757 and frequently run trips on those too.

I prefer to think of myself as a 767-400 Captain, but I can sit in the left seat of the 767-200ER and all series of 757 as well without missing a beat.

You can find me anywhere from HNL, FCO, CDG, FRA, MAD, MAN, AMS, or the West Coast to the nearest golf course to the crew hotel!

Not to mention, CO doesnt want to have the problem their good friends in MSP had with the Australian government and UA. Gotta love it if you have the insides to help destroy another airline. In my opinion, NW should have asked the US gov to investigate that. Then sue the AUS gov. or UA.

Burnsie28:

The problem that NWA had with the Australian Government was that NWA broke the agreements they had made.

And it seems a bit cheeky to say that any other airline (or government) helped to "destroy" NWA - how was NWA "destroyed"?

NWA spends a great deal of time and money sticking the boot into other airlines.

As I had mentioned in an earlier post, I would suggest that the best option for CO/NW/DL to enter the Australian market would be to work together under the SkyTeam banner and operate B764 or A330 from HNL.

10 hr sector, means u could do the sector with one aircraft.

U have CO/DL/NW flying into HNL from their 11 ports in the USA, then onto a dedicated B764 or A330 to serve SYD or MEL. Given that HA is serving SYD, I would enter MEL...

It would be a good market only if the 777s had range to perform IAH-SYD nonstop, otherwise there is no hub in the USA which to connect and route passengers.

CO would be slaughtered if they tried LAX-SYD, but IAH-SYD is very interesting, near the great circle from the east coast to SYD.

They would not only get attacked by QF and UA on the LAX-SYD route, they would get weight restricted big time. But I heard a rumor that they are going to use the 752 with winglets EWR-MEL  Big thumbs up
