Air NZ Voted Best Pacific Airline....again

Thu Oct 14, 2004 11:13 am

For the 6th time in a row Air NZ has been voted the Pacific's best airline at the Asia Travel awards. This award comes a few weeks after Air NZ was voted the Worlds Best Long-Haul Airline.

Well done Air NZ!!!

I wonder how long NZ will hold this position if stupid decisions like the recent saab replacement occur on a regular basis???

Congrats and well done... for now the flag carrier does us proud.
What?

How was the saab replacement with Dash 8s a stupid decision? NZ wanted new planes and not second hand. The Dash 8 Q300 seats 50 passengers and this will work well for NZ because domestic travel has sky rocketed since Domestic Express was introduced.

I don't understand why the Dash 8 decision was a stupid decision Confused

The dash decision is a very wise one, especially in times when fuel skyrockets. The dash's are very economical airplanes for up to 1 1/2 hours flights.

I think Aerohottie has a point - I can't understand why they didn't get ATR-42s. I'm sure ATR would have been very keen to see more of their a/c in Air NZ colours.

Anyway, well done to Air NZ.

Being a former employee I am slightly biased, but they are a great airline!  Smile

Some of the reasons that I can think of for NZ not going with the ATR-42 is because it might be expensive on fuel, for its size and passenger numbers and the ATR-42 could be expsensive in maintaince. NZ would only purchase aircraft that they believe will work for them and have been proven to work. The Q300 is newer then the ATR42 so it has more and better technology then the ATR42 so the Q300 would be more nicer on fuel.

I'll keep out of the regional aircraft debate, but well done to NZ. I hope their recent good performances keep on going. They have done the country proud.

I've been looking at New Zealand as a "must" destination within the next 5 years. Now I know the airline I will take will be Air New Zealand.

And the decision to replace the Saabs with the dash 300 was an excellent one which will only help keep Air New Zealand among the very top carriers, as was their stellar decision to acquire the 7E7 and the 777.

Try flying after next year, then you will be sure that the NZ 744s will have full IFE systems.

If you saw how many engine changes etc we currently do on the ATR-72's you would understand the reasoning behind getting Q300's. In my opinion it was a VERY wise choice.

NZ1............

Both aircraft have PW Canada engines. The ATR72 appears to have 127 series engines and the Q300 123 series. Is there a reason why the 123 series is expected to be more reliable?

Is it true that the ATR42 is a problem aircraft? How many times are the ATR72 engines changed per aircraft?

It is interesting - and I write as an Air NZ long haul passenger since 1968, and domestic since NAC merged in 1979 - that I find flying AirNZ domestically is an even BETTER experience since they stopped serving meals.

Full meal service to 100 passengers on a 28 minute sector WLG-CHC was totally disruptive as people rushed around frenetically, leant over you, asked what wine you wanted and grabbed your tray as the undercarriage was coming down.

Now these flights are havens of calm where I can do a little work if I want to or just meditate, and a much more relaxed cabin crew are noticeably more pleasant - which is a much greater contribution to my well being than frantic food and slightly frazzled staff.

I suspect this latter point must be more important than we realise given that Air NZ is scoring so well despite the current behind the market IFE and seating on international. Mind you, the A320 cabins are as good as it gets outside of a sleeper bed.

I used to be cabin crew for Mount Cook Airline, who operate the ATR-72.

I don't recall anyone within the airline, pilots included, mentioning a problem with engine reliability.

I found the ATR-72 to be extremely reliable, I can only recall about 5 or 6 instances in a 1.5 year period when I had a duty cancelled or changed due to a/c problems.

Haha,

TG992 that is funny, but true. I am not aware what the engine type on the Q300 is, but if it is the same variant as the AT7's we are in for a costly exercise.

I know for a fact that in August and September, the engine change rate was nearing 1 per fortnight for a while. I personally can't wait till we ditch them, though we have a 10 year lease, so it will be a while.

When they replace the 733 on domestic would they look at the Embraer 190 instead of A319.

Yes NZ Link have ordered another ATR72, it will be delivered about November.

RichardJF
It would be A319 or A320s as NZ have got about 15 options on the A320 family
