Better Transatlantic Product

I am interested in what experiences you guys have had. I want to know who has the better service across the pond? KL AF or CO? I also want to know who offers the best seat.

I actually really love the new CO coach seats. They have the adjustable "wing-type" headrests and are firm and properly supportive (like a German Car). It makes a long flight much more comfortable

I am partial to CO on most flights. The KLM 777 in business class is also quite nice. Normally the KL,NW are sub par compared to CO.

AF is hit or miss. The product in C class is good but service varies greatly.

I have over 100K Skyteam miles since July in transatlantic C class.

I was really looking at Y class this time over. Does anybody know about pitch, meal svc and IFE for AF and KL-I know from first hand experince the CO svc.

From your list, I have only taken AF and CO, not KL. My opinion is that it depends on the aircraft: avoid the AF 744 if you can. CO 764 and 772 are great. AF 772 are good too (AF 343 is, in my opinion, less comfortable than the 772). I am looking forward flying the AF 773ER some day.

AF-IFE..if 777 or A340, then IFE in back of seat. 747s are being refit with new seats and IFE but nowhere near done, so probably no IFE if you get 747. Seat pitch 32" generally, some seats are 31.5". Seat width: 17" on 747, 18" on 777 and 17.5" on A340.

KL-IFE: MD11 yes, 743-no, 767-no. Seat pitch: 31.5-32". Better on 767 than on MD11/743.
NW: IFE-A330 only. Seat pitch 31.5" Seat width: 17.5" (except far back, then only 17".

Of all, AF 777 is best for comfort and for food. KL/NW could be hit or miss, depending on which airline is operating the flight, and aircraft type.

CO 764 and 762 have excellent Economy seats, 32", but 18" wide seats plus good size IFE in the back of the seat. Service is good, meal is average, but not horrible.

If you were not flying CO, take the AF 777 if you can.

Air France. No question.
If you must fly in Economy, Air France is the best you will find.

I've only had very positive experiences with their cabin crew. And the food can't be beat. It's not luxuriously comfortable and the food isn't brilliant, but certainly edible. The cabins are clean and attractive, most with in-seat video. Beer and wine are available free of charge.

If you're headed to Vienna or can transit Vienna, I would strongly endorse Austrian Airlines. The crews can be snippy, but the food, seat comfort, and entertainment are excellent.

bmi is also a good option. I've never flown aboard bmi, but I've heard only glowing reports about their Transatlantic service.

SAS has drastically reduced its catering (no choice of meals!) but the A330s have in-seat video and Copenhagen has (I think) the best hub in Europe.

I can only comment on their Business service:

KL is inconsistent in their product and service. The 747 & 767 offer great comfort, but the 777 has a 2-3-2 config that I don't like.

The crews can be good or bad, depending on the day.

CO, I have never had a bad flight or service in BizFirst. BizFirst at CO is really a very different product then most business classes. Very good, excellent crews.

The 777 was 2-2-2 and the 767 was 2-1-2. Very nice.

I am doing AF in Feb. ORD-CDG-MUC and back and hope that it is good in Biz.

I generally lean toward the european airlines with alliances toward CO/DL when going cross the atlantic. They seem to offer a better product, they give amenity kits and free liquor!
Austrian was an option but no FF mile transfer to CO or DL.

KL no longer flies the 743, in fact their last 747 classic was a 742SUD. They have only 2 pilot A/C now. AF's food rep is second to none, CO has great comfort and KL good service. They are all good carriers, so congrats on having so many alliance choices.
