Air Canada New Colors, Which Cities?

Thu Oct 14, 2004 1:21 pm

sorry if this is covered in another thread, I looked but didn't see one.

Which three cities will Air Canada be rolling out their new colors next week? Is it Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa? Nothing on the West Coast?

It's expected that Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver will be the cities to see the new scheme first. Oct 20th 10-11am is the expected unveiling in Vancouver.

Speculation is that the 767-300 (fin639) which is now in AMA will arrive at 10:00 on Oct19th in YYZ for the initial unveiling, then fly to YUL for a 14:30 unveiling there, and on Oct 20th it will fly to YVR for a 10:00 show for the YVR employee's. There are apparantly other announcements to be made as well on these dates(new uniforms, routes etc). More info about the 2 day roadshow is expected later today.

Is there anyone from AMA on a.net that could give us a sneak peak at the new livery?

Almost anything should be better than their current one. Hopefully it isn't another lack-of-personality eurowhite scheme.

Just off the top of my head I think the current scheme must be around 10yrs old or pretty close to that. I'm certain that someone more knowlegable than me will gladly shoot me down for even daring to guess though. I've never been a huge fan of the current scheme, but hopefully they use the "Tango tail" as part of the new scheme.

As mentioned in many other threads on UA's new livery, it shouldn't cost any more to paint the aircraft with a new color scheme than it does now. All aircraft are repainted during their heavy maintenance checks ("D" check), as they must be stripped of their paint to check for cracks and fractures. As long as AC doesn't use a super complicated livery with lots of colors, the cost difference won't be significant. Though I doubt it will be any cheaper, look at what they have now.

I hope they come up with a really good one as, and I might be the exception, I quite
like their current scheme. It's simple but, in my opinion, very effective.

Hi all,

Hopefully, they think of CP-Air as on of the main ancestors of what is now Air Canada. A reminiscene to CP-Air`s top paint-sheme (the orange one) would be great!

I hate the all-white look. It's dull and boring. And the red maple leaf on black for the tail is downright horrible. The maple leaf looks wilted to me. I actually liked the previous scheme.

I think the current scheme is around since 1994, I have an old AirPictorial magazine with a story on AC and it shows the new colours in 1 picture.

I think I remember that AC's current colour scheme came out in 1994, so it's about 10-11 years old now.

I also think AC's going to want to go for something other than a totally "Eurowhite" colour scheme, as I have a feeling it appears to be heading for a radical image makeover in not only the colour scheme, but also service and other things. And this is regardless of whether or not it just got out of CCAA status - sometimes one has to spend money to make money. Many corporations, including airlines, are very well aware of this.

I was able to dig up a copy of Horizons (AC's internal Newsletter) dated December 1, 1993, the day on which Air Canada launched its current corporate identity. The initital strategy was to sever the ties in which consumers identified AC as a crown corporation. The then new identity was to strongly link Air Canada to Canada, the country, and reflect the most positive imageds of Canada itself (hospitable, spacious, state-of-the-art, peaceful and diverse).

Was unable to find it through search, but a recent posting illustrated an artists rendering of an aircraft with shades of emerald green, reds, oranges, which has been rumored to be the choice or close to it. Anybody have that link??

Should be interesting.....

I think the first appearance of the current c/s was around December 1993. I have photos dated April 1994 of an A320, a B762 and a DC-9 in the new c/s. I believe it was 1998 when the repainting was complete.

If any of the British/European readers have got the latest Airliner World (November) they have a pic in there (page 16). They state its one of many ideas released internally by the company.

Its very Eurowhite (not that theres anything wrong with that!). It has a green tail, with green lettering in a pretty rubbish font.... the maple leaf is diagonal on the tail and extends to the fuselage in a range of green/white/red/orange/yellow stripes. The maple leaf is also on the fuselage behind the lettering. Its not a very nice scheme really, prefer the current one.

Also, like it said, its one of a number of schemes released internally, and the fact that a magazine has got hold of it suggests it won't be the final one as I guess thats being stictly embargoed until its launch....

The pic of the 747 is not the new colour scheme, it was a creation of some amateur on another website, and last I heard he wishes he'd copyrighted the thing. It's been floating around the net for a month now. This info has already been posted here in another thread.

I kinda like that illustration of a "possible" livery. Although I am someone who does like change. However, I am hoping for a scheme that will be created by the same people who created Aeroflot's current scheme.

Where is the a.net thread that has already posted regarding the same topic as this thread? I would like to read what people wrote there.

Whoa - is that ever gross! I think that's an someone just playing around - in any case, a real proof of concept comp would have to look a lot more polished.

In any case, the 744s will all be out of service before this rolls out, right?

News to me as well!! That's cool, but to be honest, I don't think the one they have is bad...I like the tail, and the font, but other than that it could definitely do a good makeover. As long as it looks good is all I care.

Crj900,

I totally agree. I even emailed RP Abraham to tell him how cool of a look it is.

I actually like the current livery. Although it is Eurowhite, it is recognizable and simple. But a new livery, one with colour along the fuselage, would be amazing.

They oughta keep their livery the way it is. I personally think the plane white looks profesional. I love the current AC colors and will be sad when they are all gone.
Them and LH are fantastic for their type.

quick question (pardon my ignorance on this):

Why are those liveries referred to as Euro-White liveries? Because many airlines in Europe rely on it? Or is there more to that name?

thx

FlyinTLow

Eurowhite referes to the liveries that feature all white paint basically.

This scheme was introduced to the world by Air France in 1974 and was first applied to the Airbus A300-B2. The aircraft first went into service between LHR and CDG.

I am going to take this opportunity to point something out. In order to have EUROWHITE, you have to have a completely white body. Therefore, Delta, Lufthansa, British Airways, United, Continental, etc do NOT have Eurowhite liveries. Air France, SWISS, Easyjet, Air Canada(current) Qantas, and South African Airways do have eurowhite liveries.

The Eurowhite name was coined because it was invented by Air France, and it was sleek, modern and effecient at the time. I may point out, that shortly after this scheme was introduced, Air France commeneced supersonic concorde operations.

(about Eurowhite and othe white planes...)

Ah, those all white planes... Three reasons to dislike them:
-They are so boring!
-They make the fuselage look like a giant worm!
-They get dirty so easily...

One reason for airlines to like them:
-Surely costs less to repaint in only one colour, without motives or cheat lines...

One reason for lessors to love them:
-When an airliner is repossessed, you only have to repaint the tail to lend it to another customer...

...In short, cheap.

p.s. Yes, it was nice, when it was ONE company using it...

Lets see Air Canada adopt a TUI style livery.. Wow that would be something.

OVerall, surprising news and hopefully the wait will be worth it.
My prediction is that the Maple leaf will be kept but will perhaps undergo a transformation to make it look better such as the United sign which has been enlarged on the fin.

My dream would be that the new colors be the PROUD WINGS livery of Old Canadian.. Holy crap would that be sweet!

One might think that the Star Alliance carriers would slowly adopt a common theme. If so, then the last change, at UAL, should be an indicator. However, I doubt my own speculation there..... Smile

I don't think Star Alliance members will ever come to a certain co-ordinated look. And just as well too. Membership in an alliance is something that may not last forever.

The maple leaf if a beautiful icon and one that instantly is linked to Canada, never mind how many other countries have maple trees on their soil. This is something that Canada will do well to tap into (look at how well Australia has used her kangaroo - not necessarily only by the airline).

The current livery is actually very classy but the deep green background appears as black in every single picture I have ever seen (or taken myself). Even in the best of light, there is no hint of green-ness.

I look forward to the new livery with great anticipation and am confident that a great livery will emerge.

The current livery is now almost 11 years old. I remember well when it was launched in December 1993. I saw my first example (as I recall, an Air Canada connector prop) that month. It took four years before I saw no more of the red and white ones that were in the previous livery; I had read it would be three but I guess they decided they'd give them all D checks before painting the entire fleet.

I happen to like the current livery, but am not particularly attached to it. Whatever they come up with, I will be very interested in seeing the result. Hope it's creative but tasteful - not like that awful striped maple leaf in the pic above!

Actually, green is not an unlikely choice for the new c/s. One thing AC has to consider is that they are an airline for all Canada, and there is still a great emotional divide between Quebec and "the rest." Quebec's flag is mostly blue; Canada's is mostly red. So red or blue I would bet are not going to be part of the new colour scheme.

Also, some posters have referred to AC's current tail colour as black; in fact it is a very deep green, but such a lousy colour choice that in almost any light it does in fact appear black.

There's confirmation of what some people have suspected with the rebranding that's under wraps.

Two 767-300s are reportedly in a hangar in Amarillio, TX and will wait until after dark on Oct. 18 to depart, one to YYZ and the other to YUL and placed inside hangars there overnight until the official unveiling ceremonies.

In YUL, the AC hangar will be used to store the rebranded 763, while in YYZ, it's the middle of the GTAA hangar with access off Britannia Road.

One of the 763s will go to YVR on Oct. 20 for an employee presentaion.

An Embraer EMB-170 will also be on display, but no word on whether it will be in YYZ or YUL.
