I really want to take a trip down to SXM & view the arrivals from the beach I see all the pictures of. Is this area safe & what hotels close by are recommended? Thanks

Ah ha...another victim of George's fear-tactics.

SXM is perfectly safe and an excellent experience. Most aircraft types you will see are Twin Otters, B752s and the occassional A343 (Air France), B744 (KLM) - although it may be back to an MD-11 - and Conair's B743s, along with Continental 737. Also some B727s, but for the most part, regional prop planes. Lots of places to stay around the area, but very expensive. Nice place, quite an experience and lots of different angles to spot at. Enjoy!

Wow! Is this a new airline? I have no record of a Conair airline and certainly not operating B743s  Wow!. Where are they based and where do they fly out of please? Registrations and cn's please too? Website address? Pictures? I don't see any Conair B743 pictures in the photo archive  Confused

The airport itself has an excellent safety record - the island is pretty safe too... although petty crime is quite common - don't leave valuables in your car (even the trunk) and other commonsense precautions are all that is required.

I would say, go now the famous beach is still there. There are plans to extend the runway into the sea, which means the beach will be gone.

I was through there in August and on the return, on a Saturday, it was a zoo -- DL, AA (2), US (2), CO had 757s on the ground; Air TranSat had an A330; AF had an A340; KLM had a 744, plus all the twin-otters, etc. The departure area was chaos........

A fairly nice hotel within walking distance of the beach (you can actually see it in most pictures) is the Maho Beach Resort If you get an oceanside room, you can watch the planes land right from your balcony! The resort is the building beneath and also to the left of the Corsair in this picture:

The Sunset Beach Bar is on the other end of the beach (short walking distance) and a little sailboat bar is on the near end of the beach.

I was there at the end of August. Stayed at the Divi Little bay resort. Had a fab time! Hired a car from Maynards car rental. That company is amazing, picks you up, drops you off at the airport. All for free. car rental was $25 per day. Alot cheaper than budget

Anyways, didnt see any mention of extending the runway into the sea on the airport master plans they had plastered round the place.

No it's not safe. This one time, I heard, a little girl was blown out to see by a LIAT Dash 8 after take off, and she was instantly eaten by Great White sharks.

When I was there, people's heads were impaled by sticks and rocks, and everyone was walking around blind after repeatedly getting sand blasted in their eyes. It's a mad house I tell ya! A MAD HOUSE! Big grin

In all seriousness, crime or aircraft being a factor, do you think they'd have all those resorts in an area that wasn't safe?

I stayed at Little Divi also back in July. It's not right next to SXM, it's about 7 miles away in Phillipsburg. Definatly worth the trip tho!

I also heard or saw no plans to extend the runway. This is a rumor started by some negative thinkers here on The planes dont have any problems landing or taking off. Plus I don't think the nearby resorts would go for it, I'm sure they get enough negative complaints already.

How did you find Divi? I had a great time there and found the staff to be really friendly!

I can;t see any need to extend the runway. The current work being done is extending the terminal area onto reclaimed land in simpson bay. work is underway as we speak.

Divi was awesome, great rates for a suite too. Just bought food at a supermarket and ate in most nights. Their restaurants were great too. Being off on its own little peninsula offered a nice atmosphere. I'd stay again!

Greetings to all.

I love to hear that more people are interested in plane spotting at SXM. I myself have been lucky enough to have gone 3 times in 2004. As far as SXM being safe, absolutely. No extra concerns other then watching your personal belongings. The natives of the Island are very friendly and courteous. I usually get around the Island in taxis. Never had a problem. Always had friendly, benevolant people.

As for a place to stay, I have stayed all three times at the Caravanserai hotel. It is the hotel that is right along side the airport and is also the closest to Maho beach. It is also the cheapest hotel. Not to be turned off by that though. All rooms have AC, cable TV, telephones, balconies, 4 swimming pools, chinese restaurant, a convenience store, etc. However, you do pay for what you get. Mattresses are weak, running water from the shower is weak. But if you are on a budget or are looking to save money, this is the place to stay. Still a very decent hotel and an affordable price. The hotel has a website through a travel agency but they charge over and above if you were to contact the hotel directly. The tel # to the Caravanserai is not posted anywhere, but if you are interested, E mail me and i will find the # for you.

Hey ya,

if your question is only related to the airport, then yes, it is safe, but, primarily incredibly spectacular,

all the three times I went there I had some absolute (aviation) highlights -

what might put you in danger, though, is Saint Martin's nightlife, especially when you start already at the Sunset Beach Bar (Beer 2 Bucks) enjoying more than just the landing beauties,

I mostly had a wonderful time, I did not stay at the Mega resorts, as they tend to be costly, and managed to find, basic but safe and clean accommodation in either the French or Dutch part of the island,

take care when leaving your car or scooter (which I can recommend - with a scooter you can easily overtake the annoying traffic jams that frequently occur, especially around Cole Bay and between Marigot and Philippsburg),

have a good time and enjoy paradise,

Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.
