Air Zimbabwe Into SIN/PEK & HRE - Australia Flts

Fri Oct 15, 2004 2:00 am

In an old Air Zimbabwe schedule I have seen flights from HRE to PER and SYD operating with 744. Checking an old OAG I have seen, that Qantas used to fly into Zimbabwe earlier, combining the HRE flights with JNB. What kind of people did they target and how have the loads been on flights from/to HRE?

Another thing, why does UM fly into Singapore and Beijing? There are flights loaded in the CRS from 15NOV04. What are they doing there? Chinese investment in Zimbabwe?

And that justifies to operate a twice weekly HRE-SIN-PEK flight? I'm pretty sure UM would have also a little interest in having routes with a certain yield/clf.

Sorry, but does anything make economic sense in Zimbabwe??

 Sad

UM will operate wherever Mugave tells them to do so...Probably next flight they will start will be to KRT (Khartoum)...

Qantas only flew to HRE to get round the apartheid era ban on flights to South Africa.

What does a Australia - South Africa flight via HRE make different than a non-stop flight?

Andz:

You're right! At the time of parteit SA would fly to Taipei (one of the few places they could lan)...of course, Taipei's regime would stand by any country stating that Taipei was not part of continental China....nowadays, following economic logic and not political games, SA has flights to HKK and not Taipei....

Do I understand that correctly, that Qantas ONLY flew to HRE before 1994 and never operated flights into South Africa during apartheid?

The flights I was refering to have been around 1998 operating as Australia-HRE-JNB-Australia.

You have a valid point with Mugabe but somehow I'm pretty sure, that Air Zimbabwe needs to have a bit of management. If they run out of money, Mugabe can tell them many things, but they won't be able to fly.

I have heard QF ploughed quite a bit of money into safety equipment at HRE during the relatively brief time they were forbidden to fly into JNB by the Australian government. This may explain why they were reluctant to give it up.

Swissgabe Australia was one of the most vehement opponents to apartheid, but there were direct flights between Australia and South Africa in the old days. The anti-apartheid movement really stepped up their squeeze in the early 80s, which soon saw the end of flights to many of SAA's destinations such as the US and Australia. SAA's flights to the US were stopped in 1986 and to Australia in 1987.

I'm pretty sure that Qantas operated to South Africa prior to the switch to Harare but I can't find any information about when.

The abovementioned flights to Taipei started in 1980.

Re: At the time of parteit SA would fly to Taipei (one of the few places they could land)

SA continued to operate flights to HKG after the TPE route started.

QF operated a weekly 74L then 743 then 744 service to HRE (on Sundays, IIRC) via PER. SAA laid on an A300 from JNB to HRE to meet up with it for the pax and cargo transferring to/from SA (slightly ironic). The Zimbabwe government guaranteed the sale of I think half the plane, in order to persuade QF to operate the service at all, but in the end it was used mostly by traffic too and from SA. When sanctions against SA were lifted, QF switched to a round robin SYD-PER-HRE-JNB-PER-SYD service in conjunction with SYD-PER-JNB, I seem to recall, then canned the HRE stop completely and just flew SYD-PER-JNB.

UM will be flying HRE-SIN-PEK twice weekly (Mondays and Fridays) using B767-200's. They also appear to have switched their bi-weekly FRA service to MUC instead.
