New US Major To Scandinavia Spring 2005?

Fri Oct 15, 2004 10:42 pm

I have just heard a *rumour* (that is unsubstantiated) that a US major will be announcing a new Scandinavian route for spring 2005. The press announcement is expected 19 October (that is , next Tuesday). I am not sure that UAs replacement of SK aircraft IAD-CPH is enough for a press announcement. Has anybody heard anything that I haven't?? Sorry if it's been discussed before - I haven't found a thread on this.

Since I work in Sales for a US major in Sweden, such an announcement would affect me directly (like maybe I need to send my application to the right airline!). Thanks for any info - have a good weekend y'all!

CO to ARN is a possibility - my contacts at CO here in Sweden have been very quiet. I have it on pretty good authority that it won't be AA or DL - not too many surprises there!

CO is expanding very much at the moment so perhaps we are able to see CO at Stockholm soon. Any co-flights with their service to Oslo during winter periodes perhaps.

Does anyone know why AA dropped ORD-ARN? I actually know more than a few people who took that flight, both business and leisure.

The rumor was that CO was going to add service to atleast one more Scandic city as part of the 2005 transatlantic expansion......the other rumor was that CO was going to add 6 transatlantic routes.

We have Berlin, Hamburg, Bristol and Belfast for sure....the question is whether the other two cities are in fact Moscow and Lagos (although many think that these cities are definite, CO has not announced anything officially yet) or will two other cities be added. Your guess is as good as mine....my sources were not as accurate as they usually are and I was totally taken by surprise by Moscow and Hamburg, so I am not sure what to think.

It could be CO.....or as you pointed out, this could be much ado about nothing and UA will simply be flying the IAD-Copenhagen flight with their equipment.

I think CO may very well be announcing a couple more 757 Trans-Atlantic routes, so far we have Belfast, Berlin, Bristol, and Hamburg all to be operated by 757s.

CO announced prior to the launch of the latest Trans-Atlantic route expansion that they would double the number of 757s currently configured with the Businessfirst cabins, they currently operate six nonstop 757 flights across the Atlantic with 757s (Birmingham 2xs daily, Shannon daily, Edinburgh daily, Lisbon daily, Oslo daily). If they indeed double their International configured 757 fleet then they would be able to add another six nonstop trans-Atlantic flights, so far they have announced four (Belfast, Berlin, Bristol, Hamburg).

It may very well be that the rumor of 6 new Trans-Atlantic routes planned for '05 were in reference to 6 new 757 flights, and so far we have four. So there's a strong possibily that there's two more, their doubling of International configured 757s supports that notion.

The Moscow and Lagos applications may be separate from the "Six new Trans-Atlantic destinations for '05" rumor, I expect they may well be which means there's a strong possibility of CO adding two more 757 trans-Atlantic flights to the recently announced list.

EIRob,

When you say Scandinavian do you then mean Sweden?

Or is there a possibility that it could be to Copenhagen? Continental EWR-CPH...?

Anyway my bet is on the announcement of a Continental route from EWR to ARN.

SAS767,

I don't restrict myself to Sweden on this question! Since I'm based in STO, of course I'm most interested in new flights coming to Sweden, but I'm actually interested to know about Scandinavia as a whole. I'm not convinced Norway has a big enough market for more than one US carrier - CPH already has a bundle of US flights - even if it's SK! My own hunch is actually also CO into ARN - but I don't know if it'll run beside OSL or take alternate days or something.....

PHL-CPH has been rumored as a possibility for US Airways (along with PHL-BHX/VIE/WAW/MXP), and US does have two spare widebodies since it pulled down the PIT hub.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

According to StandbyNews http://www.standbynews.com/ (in Swedish only), an announcement is expected tomorrow from CO - regarding a major expansion of service to Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland! Unconfirmed by CO at the moment.

No surprise if CO want more Scandinavian routes. The Oslo route has been quite good with load factors around 90% this summer.

However, Stockholm will get Malaysian to New York soon as well as SAS so there might not be room for 3 carriers on that route. Copenhagen has SAS 2 times daily to New York so a 3rd. daily is also maybe too many...

Maybe Gothenburg will get a service to New York? CO like to start services to cities with no or limited competition.

Of course UA would put out a press release if they were to take over IAD-CPH from SK.

Zvezda - yes UA would announce if they were to permanently take over IAD-CPH. However, as I understand it, the current situation is that SK will be leasing aircraft from UA to cover a temporary capacity shortage caused by the maintainance schedule for their long haul A/C. Mind you, I have also heard/read here that UA might indeed take over the route...

My current vote goes to CO EWR-ARN and/or EWR-CPH. GOT I think is unlikely, since GOT and OSL share catchment area to some extent. GOT has had trouble supporting various routes over the last 4-5 years, I'm not sure the local market is strong enough for a transatlantic service, and connection opportunities are much more limited than at ARN or CPH....

Still, we'll see!

HPnonrev, EWR-HEL interesting! Put AY in an interesting position since they already have HEL-JFK. EWR-HEL would also be the best solution for me personally, since I don't cover Finland, so my markets won't be affected so greatly compared to new direct USA flights from SE/DK or NO....

Ckfred, I guess AA lost much money on their ORD-ARN route, even íf I heard from different people who flied the route said "It was nearly full". Now SAS is self on ARN-ORD and the flight is often full. I really hope AA will come back to Stockholm one day, it's my favourite US airline together with Delta who also dropped ARN-JFK after 9/11 just like AA did. I really agree that Norway could have more US flights than they have atm, imo SAS should start OSL-ORD before looking at CPH-San Fransisco.

I think that a wrap flight of EWR-ARN-CPH-EWR with a 752, similar to their old EWR-KIN-MBJ-EWR and EWR-SXM-AUA-EWR routes before they were split up, might make sense for CO if they are worried that ARN or CPH alone woulnd't have enough traffic. The two cities are close together, so it wouldn't be that much out of the way for pax.

What you say is true, Cory6168, except that pax tend to avoid flights such as those......especially when CO will be counting on a lot of connecting traffic at EWR. Flying from ARN to LAX, for example, would become a two stop affair (CPN and EWR) which would not appeal to premium or high yeild pax.

As I posted above, I have heard that CPN,ARN and HEL are all on CO's short list for new service and was surprised that the other cities were announced with no mention of Scandanavia.....lets see what happens.

Elrob

I do not think that if CO will add EWR-HEL it will make some troubles for AY.
They have well esteblished service.

What about Cargo capacity of 757 compare to MD-11?

Dutchjet - yes I see your point. I'm not sure what I expect at the moment. EWR-CPH seems reasonable, but CO have been very competitve price wise from ARN as well.

Traveler_7 - I think I agree, but of the Nordic capitals, HEL is 'underserved' and following from others comments that CO likes underserved routes - who knows? Cargo capacity - no idea! I deal in 'self loading freight'!

One thing is for certain - I'll be scouring the news tomorrow - and hope somebody here will post something once they've heard what it's going to be! Never a dull moment......

Could it be NW to OSL, ARN/CPH? Not too far out of the relm of possibility, it's only a matter of time. We're supposed to be using the 757 to Europe next summer.

Stockholm is CO's 5th new Trans-Atlantic Destination to be operated with a 757 for '05, the others are Belfast, Berlin, Bristol, Hamburg. The rumor from August stated six new Trans-Atlantic destinations for '05, so with that and the fact that CO is doubling the size of their International configured 757s looks like there may be another announcement about a sixth destination as well as the expected ARN announcement.

looks like there may be another announcement about a sixth destination as well as the expected ARN announcement.

The sixth is Moscow/DME, pending government approval. Looks like Lagos isn't happening, though.

ORD - OSL and ORD - HEL seem like a good choices, but is there enough premium passengers on the route? Nokia on DFW-ORD-HEL with AA connections? Just a thought and desire to see more Scandinavia to US service.
