JAT Airways To Purchase Eight Boeing 737-800s

Serbia's JAT Airways to Purchase Jets

Serbia's national carrier JAT Airways will purchase Boeing jets and next year will resume flights to New York and Toronto for the first time in 12 years, the airline's director said Friday.

Aleksandar Milutinovic said JAT was holding final negotiations with Boeing on the purchase of its "latest generation" jets. JAT sources said that under consideration were eight Boeing 737-800s and two 767 extended-range planes which will be leased.

The decision meant that JAT ditched its preliminary deal made in 1998 with Airbus on the purchase of eight A319 jets that were to be delivered by 2005.

"JAT needs Boeing," Milutinovic said, referring to a long history of Boeing planes in JAT's fleet and training and maintaining capacities for the U.S.-built planes by local crews. The current JAT fleet consists of Boeing 737-300s and aging Boeing 727-200s.

A deal with Boeing would mean that JAT will purchase new planes for the first time in more than 15 years.

JAT Airways has been struggling to rebuild its fleet and reclaim a position in the market following international sanctions slapped on Serbia during the 1990s for the republic's role in the Balkan wars. The sanctions included an air embargo.

JAT Airways, formerly known as Yugoslav Airlines, stopped flying to the United States and Canada in 1992 after U.N. sanctions were imposed.

Milutinovic said JAT plans to resume its flights to New York and Toronto in June next year after receiving flight rights from the U.S. flight authorities earlier this week.

Good for the 738 line... amazing that they'res still room to fit a new customer in there! Anywho.. weren't 717-200s being considered earlier as part of an effort to consolidate several RJs into a single, modern type?

Two 'major' orders by Eastern European flag-carriers in a short space of time. First CSA with an order for 12 A320 Family aircraft and now JAT order 8 B738s. I guess both Airbus and Boeing are competing fiercely for these orders.

Great news, the 738s will fit perfectly into the JAT fleet. Lets hope one of those 767s their planning to introduce next year can resume flights to Melbourne and Sydney again. I hope they hold on to the DC-10.

Thanks VH-TAE.

Rather than the name, they should change the logo and the image...

This is great news indeed. I think the 737-800 and the 767-300 would have looked much better in the colourscheme still used on their DC-10-30. But that's just my opinion. Great news for both JAT and Boeing  Wink/being sarcastic

JAT previously standed for "Jugoslovenski Aerotransport", Yugoslav Air Transport; when the name "Yugoslavia" desappeared, the company switched to "JAT Airways" with the intention to keep in life a 75 year old name.
I believe everyone agrees upon the fact that the company needs a new image and a different visibility. They definitely need to hire a new marketing manager and finally make a serious marketing effort...

I believe that the article published by the Associated Press is misleading, as no contract has been signed. The details of the fleet composition has not been made official, and neither has the number of aircraft to be purchased. Nevertheless, it is believed that Jat Airways is in their final stages of negotiations with Boeing, and an official announcement can come soon.

In my opinion, I doubt that Jat Airways will purchase eight B-737-800s, unless Boeing entices them with a very favorable offer to counteract the recent Airbus orders from CSA Czech Airlines. If this is the case, we can expect an announcement of a firm order within two weeks.

To answer a few questions from earlier postings:

(1) Jat Airways did not consider the 717, since it is interested in building up its RJ fleet. The Embaer 170 is regarded as the most favored candidate at this time.

(2) The airline plans on flying to Chicago, however their first priority will be to re-open direct flights to New York and Toronto with newly acquired 762s instead. Jat Airways and Uzbekistan Airways currently code-share on the BEG-JFK route, with HY 763s operated twice weekly. The agreement terminates at the end of the year.

From a few sources that I have read shows that Jat Airways is realistically considering the following preliminary purchase from Boeing:

2 B-737-600
2 B-737-700
2 B-737-800

Two B-767-200ER's should also join the fleet next year but these two planes are to be leased rather than purchased.

This combination makes more sense, since the the 738's would be a perfect replacement for the two remaining B-727-200s that are now used for chartered flights. The other four Boeing 737's could replace the remaining DC-9's, in combination with a possible order of 70-seat RJ's from Embaer.

Cheers
